Angel (エンジェル Enjeru?) is a character in the Tekken series who first appeared in Tekken 2. Angel is a palette swap of Devil in Tekken 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament, and later returned in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 with a separate character slot and moveset. Angel is a mysterious being about whom little is known, but fought Devil in order to try and save Kazuya Mishima's soul.

Biography

Angel first appeared without any storyline explanation, save for the fact that Angel fights with Devil over Kazuya's soul. As Angel was originally a palette swap and direct clone of Devil, and as implied in Angel's Tekken 2 biography, it was thought that Angel was a representation of the good in Kazuya. Angel's biography states that when some people looked at Kazuya, some could see Angel and others could see Devil. Subsequently, however, Katsuhiro Harada, has stated that Angel is not a part of Kazuya's soul.[4] It is unknown what happened to Angel or its connection to the Devil Gene, as no canonical games after Tekken 2 have featured the character.

Personality

A very elusive character in the series, Angel is a rather enigmatic figure. A heavenly exterior contrasts with a rather brutal and almost terrifying demeanor that Angel exhibits during fights. As a being of light, Angel seeks to help those who are corrupted by evil. Angel is shown to be graceful and elegant, but this is juxtaposed with a frightening side in which Angel will shriek and bellow like a wild animal.

Across the series, Angel has acted to save others, utilizing powers of light to keep evil at bay and purify those who might be brainwashed by malignant forces. Overall, Angel is the clear opposite of Devil, although the serene demeanor is often replaced by ferocious and violent outbursts.

Appearance

Angel has the appearance of a human woman, with large, white, feathered wings. Angel has blue eyes and blonde hair pulled to the back of the head in a bun. Angel has a tiara with a gemstone set in the center, from which lasers can be emitted. Angel wears white, with earlier costumes showing a sleeveless top tied with a band around the middle, three-quarters length pants and sandals crossed up the leg, reminiscent of an Ancient Greek or Roman style. Angel's design has other inspirations from Antiquity, with a toga as a main outfit in Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Angel also often wears an olive branch, which in Ancient Greek culture was associated with victory and also carries religious significance as a sign of peace. In TTT2, Angel also has some more military imagery, and wore armored gauntlets too.

Ending Description: Angel and Devil are seen battling in the night sky. Devil fires its laser at Angel, but Angel manages to block it by curling a wing around to stop the attack. Devil then fires a more powerful laser. Angel forms a shield of spherical light to protect against the laser, before emitting a powerful shockwave with an animalistic cry. The wave crashes into Devil, disintegrating it into light. A single white feather falls from the sky and rests on the back of an unconscious Kazuya in his human form.

Tekken (Titan Comics)

Angel appears in the non-canonical 2017 Tekken comic book, sporting a design from Tekken Tag Tournament 2. It is revealed that sometime prior to the events of Tekken 6, Jin Kazama captured Angel, fearing that Angel's light could stop his crusade to end the Mishima bloodline. Following Jin's disappearance after his clash with Azazel, Heihachi Mishima discovered the captive Angel. Believing that Angel's light could withstand the power of the Devil Gene, he set to work on a scheme to steal Angel's abilities for himself.

When Jin and his comrades raid the archives of the Mishima Zaibatsu to find Angel, a massive brawl with Heihachi's forces ensues, which is further complicated by the arrival of Kazuya. Jin begs Angel for forgiveness, but Angel spurns him, saying that he and his family are now beyond redemption. Jin transforms into his devil form and battles Angel in the skies above, with the two proving evenly matched. As they engage in a clash of energy beams, Angel says that Jin is the only one who can break the curse of the Mishima bloodline and bring about peace. The beams create an explosion, and when the smoke clears, both fighters have vanished.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, Angel was only a palette swap of Devil in Tekken 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament. In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Angel's fighting style has similarities to those who fight with Mishima Style Fighting Karate, but now utilizes a unique animation moveset.

Fighting Style

Angel's fighting style resembles Mishima Karate mixed with supernatural powers.

Moves

Character Relationships

  • Kazuya Mishima - Angel tried to free him from the Devil and the Devil Gene's control.
  • Devil - Angel's arch nemesis. Angel fought Devil to save Kazuya in Tekken 2 and (non-canonically) in Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
  • Jun Kazama - As a result of Jun's proximity to Kazuya, Angel seems to have arisen within Kazuya.
  • Unknown - Angel frees Jun Kazama from Unknown's control in Unknown's Tekken Tag Tournament 2 ending (non-canon).
  • Devil Jin - They seem to not like each other, as Angel flies away from him in their TTT2 win pose (non-canon). It is likely due to Devil Jin technically being an aspect of the Devil (Kazuya) that Angel originally fought.

Trivia

General:

  • "Angel" comes from ancient Greek (άγγελος), meaning "messenger, announcer, bringer of news".
  • Despite a female appearance, Angel's gender has officially always been given as 'not applicable', since Angel is not human and may not even have a physical body. Both Angel and Devil are absent of gender, height, weight, blood type, and other material attributes. Like Devil, Angel's age is listed as infinite.
    • The unapplicability of gender to Angel may also be a nod to the genderless characteristic of all angels in Judeo-Christian sources, which clearly influenced the design choice of the character Angel.
    • The choice to depict Angel as both serene and terrifying also fits with a Judeo-Christian motif, in which angels are unknowable and frightening despite being agents of good.
  • While Angel lacks a voice in Tekken 2 save for a few grunts, Angel gains one in Tekken Tag Tournament, though it is actually a recycled version of Nina Williams' voice from the original Tekken game, but with a different pitch.
    • Angel has a unique voice in Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
  • In Tekken 8, Jin transforms into Angel Jin who, like Angel, represents the good within his vessel. In this case, however, his transformation is attributed not only to his control over his Devil Gene, but the combination of this with the powers given to him by his Kazama lineage. It is unclear if there is any direct connection to Angel's origin and the appearance of Angel Jin.

Tekken 2:

  • Angel acts as an alternate costume for Devil.
  • In the arcade version, Angel's name is not shown when selected (Devil's name is displayed instead); in the PlayStation port, Angel's name appears.
  • Angel fights completely silent and has no voice samples, however when defeated on the arcade version, Kazuya's KO yell is heard. In the PlayStation version, Angel was given a unique voice, but only when taking damage and being defeated.
  • If the player fights as Devil in arcade mode, Angel is the final boss.
  • Angel is the only character whose model remains the same when using Sky Mode.
  • Angel, along with Devil, are the only characters not selected during the demo fights.

Tekken Tag Tournament:

  • Like in Tekken 2, Angel acts as an alternate costume swap for Devil.
  • In the arcade version, Angel cannot pair with Kazuya Mishima since it will revert back to Devil.
  • Angel's ending is similar to Jun Kazama's ending.
  • Angel is the only character that is not used by the computer AI.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2:

  • Angel now has a separate character slot.
  • In the console version of the game, Angel is featured in the opening movie fighting True Ogre.
  • Angel is featured in Unknown's ending, seemingly purifying Unknown of evil.
  • Angel's panel artwork by the artist JUNNY resembles The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli.
  • Angel can shoot a light beam or white laser from a tiara gem in the center of its forehead, reminiscent of the way that Devil shoots a laser from its third eye.
  • Angel's Item Move has Angel fly up to charge a sword before swinging it downward.
