Asuka Kazama (風間 飛鳥 Kazama Asuka?) is a character in the Tekken series who was first introduced in Tekken 5 and she has returned for every subsequent game in the series. Asuka is a hot-headed schoolgirl from Osaka, and a member of the Kazama Clan. While she was originally purported to be the cousin of Jin Kazama and the niece of Jun Kazama, Katsuhiro Harada has suggested their family relation is more complicated than that.[5]

Biography[]

Asuka is a member of the Kazama family and a practitioner of Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts. She was trained in her family's traditional martial arts style from a young age, and always possessed a strong sense of justice. She became well known around Osaka for breaking up fights in the neighborhood.

One day, she returned home and discovered that her father's dojo had been wrecked. The students present at the time of the attack told Asuka that a Chinese man had beaten them and hospitalized her father. Several days later, a detective from Hong Kong, Lei Wulong, arrived to investigate the incident and told Asuka that the perpetrator would likely be entering the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5. In the name of justice, Asuka decided to enter as well.[6]

Asuka defeated Lili at the tournament,[7] but was unable to find Feng Wei. The lack of closure frustrated Asuka, but her life gradually returned to normal. This peace was soon disrupted by the onset of war across the globe, however. Asuka learned that she was a relative of Jin Kazama, leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu, the conglomerate responsible for engineering the conflict. When the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 was announced, Asuka entered with the intention of taking Jin down.[8]

Asuka did not encounter Jin at the sixth tournament. Some time after, she received a phone call from Lili, who had begun to consider herself as Asuka's rival. Lili told Asuka that she had registered her for the King of Iron Fist Tournament 7 and told her she was looking forward to their fight. Though enraged by Lili's presumptuous behavior, Asuka decided to attend the tournament.[9] Asuka defeated Lili. One day, however, Asuka came home to discover that Lili had purchased her family’s dojo, even decorating it in roses.[10]

Asuka did not compete in the main stage of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 8, but Lili brought her along to the event to spectate her own match.[11] Here, Asuka witnessed Kazuya Mishima’s ascent to his True Devil form. When Lili offered to take Jin Kazama to Yakushima so that he could act on guidance provided to him, Asuka accompanied them in Lili’s private jet.[12] She and Lili performed reconnaissance on Yakushima to locate Kazuya's G Corporation forces.[13] During the battle between Yggdrasil and G Corporation's forces, Asuka and Lili intervened in a fight between Alisa Bosconovitch and G Corporation’s Jack-8, disabling it before it could defeat Alisa.[14]

Personality[]

Asuka has a brash, forthright personality and a strong sense of justice and integrity. Asuka enjoys fighting; this can be seen in her Tekken 5 interlude with Feng Wei where, upon defeating him, she decides to remain in the tournament in order to "have fun". Additionally, her Tekken 5 prologue artwork implies that she sometimes fights the perpetrators herself in the course of her 'gang mediation' - her Tekken 5 prologue text backs this up further, describing Asuka as a "nosy kid" who likes to solve other people's problems, "usually by knockout". Her pre- and post-match quotes also demonstrate her confidence. According to her Tekken Tag Tournament 2 ending, she goes around looking for gang fights to mediate in Shinsekai, which has a reputation for being Osaka's most dangerous neighborhood.[citation needed]

Asuka becomes riled by certain actions and people, though this is often with good reason and not without provocation. She is most consistently frustrated by Lili, her self-declared rival, who frequently imposes herself on Asuka and meddles in her business.

Appearance[]

Asuka has brown eyes and chin-length brown hair in a feathered cut with a side-parted fringe.

Tiring of the rich girl’s games, Asuka decides to participate in the latest tournament and settle the score.[21]

Prologue
Since they first fought at the King of Iron Fist Tournament, Asuka felt that Lili was taking the whole rivalry nonsense a little too seriously. Asuka recalled Lili's phone call out of the blue a few days earlier:

"Hello, Asuka. I am sure you have heard the news that the King of Iron Fist Tournament is starting again soon. Worry not, I have already been gracious enough to register you for the competition. No trying to weasel out of it, you hear? I am ever so looking forward to fighting you."

As Asuka let her rage toward Lili's presumptuousness fly down the phone, Lili hung up. Fed up of being treated like a rich girl's plaything, Asuka thought that maybe if she beat Lili, the conceited little princess would leave her alone. Then again, maybe not...

Asuka wondered how she could resolve the situation but came up with nothing. Eventually, she decided to go along with Lili's plan and enter the tournament.[9]

Lili had purchased the property and decided to renovate the entire building with the rose ornamentation that she loved so much.

However, Lili was willing to restore the dojo to its former appearance if Asuka could defeat her at The King of Iron Fist Tournament.

Upon seeing the message, Asuka decided to join the upcoming tournament, swearing to take back her dojo.

"No kidding! You better believe I'll win this!"

Ending Description
After defeating Lili and winning the King of Iron Fist Tournament, Asuka gets her dojo back to the way it was before, and she hopes her disciples will return soon. Standing in front of the dojo, Asuka begins wondering where Lili had gone to. Suddenly, a mountain of dojo signs fall in front of Asuka, and Lili lands on top of them. Lili reveals that she came back to gloat once again, telling Asuka that she has crushed other dojos from all around Japan. Lili now realizes that buying Asuka's dojo was a mistake, and she intends to take her dojo by defeating Asuka in a fair fight for it instead. Though irritated at first, Asuka accepts Lili's challenge and they start fighting each other once more.

Summary of In-Game Events
Asuka is seen sitting down next to Lili in the spectator seats of the Coliseum of Fate, and Asuka is displeased about getting dragged to Rome to watch Lili compete in the King of Iron Fist Tournament held by Kazuya Mishima. Hwoarang arrives to take the seat behind her and Lili, trying to recall who Asuka is and asking if she is Jin's sister. Asuka facetiously thanks Hwoarang for looking after her brother before denying that this is their relation. As Hwoarang sits, Asuka asks him if he is on Jin's side, Hwoarang denies this and instead says that he is only here to make mincemeat of Kazuya.

After Yggdrasil and the United Nations stop the tournament, Asuka along with Lili and Hwoarang enter the center of the coliseum with the rest of the fighters. Soon after, Asuka tags along with Ling Xiaoyu, Panda, and Lili to escort Jin to Yakushima via Lili's airplane. Lili presents a family tree of the Kazama Clan, and Asuka asks Lili about Jun Kazama. Lili responds that the Kazama clan was wiped out seven years ago and Jun was never heard from again. As they are about to arrive at Yakushima, Asuka tells Xiaoyu and Panda to take Jin to the shrine on the island while she goes with Lili to run reconnaissance on the forces of G Corporation.

During the war on Yakushima, Asuka and Lili land on the battlefield to save Alisa and defeat the Jack-8 that was deployed by Nina Williams.

In the good ending, Asuka and Lili are seen bickering with one another at Smith Coffee in New York.

Gameplay[]

Asuka is mainly a defensive character. She has one of the best keep-out games thanks to moves like her SS2, d+3+4, and many more. Her f+2 is also one of the best whiff punishers in Tekken. She also has arguably the best reversal and has a larger active window for reversal than other characters who require much better timing, such as Dragunov or Paul. On the other hand, the other characters' reversals do not leave them open for long if they miss the timing, while Asuka's reversal leaves her open for a significant amount of time if it is poorly timed. Her reversal also has the same weakness as all other reversal in that it is only effective against punches and kicks while other types of attacks such as elbows, knees, headbutts, shoulders, and weapon attacks will go through.

In addition to her reversal, she also has access to sabaki parries which give her full combos if she can correctly predict if an opponent is using a punch or a kick. This can make her particularly deadly against characters such as Steve and Hwoarang, who make much greater use of one over the other. Unlike the regular reversal which is effective against both punches and kicks, the sabaki cannot be chickened.

In Tekken 7, Asuka gains new moves that are more focused on her brawling-style than her Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts, such as Kagamino, Enchanted Circle, Burning Lantern, Yata Kagami, and her Rage Drive.

Fighting Style[]

Asuka fights using the Kazama style martial arts, the same as her relative Jun and while they share some moves, they have a lot of differences, to the point that one can't learn one and assume they can play the other. Asuka's style is more unorthodox and includes some street fighting elements while Jun's style is more by the book.

Quotes[]

Character Relationships[]

  • Mr. Kazama - Her father. She entered the fifth Iron Fist Tournament solely to avenge him. She intended to seek out the one who assaulted him.
  • Jin Kazama - An older relative, likely Asuka's first cousin.[23] She entered the sixth Iron Fist Tournament in order to apprehend and capture him. It is unknown whether or not she is still searching for Jin as of Tekken 7. In Tekken 8, she joins Jin's side against his father, Kazuya Mishima, and learns a presumed death of his mother, Jun during Ogre's attack seven years ago is the reason how his tragic life started.
  • Devil Jin - In her (non-canon) Tekken 5 ending, Asuka's proximity to Devil Jin causes him revert to Jin's human form. In Tekken 6 Scenario Campaign, encountering Asuka seems to cause Devil Jin to experience pain in his head.
  • Jun Kazama - A relative, likely Asuka's aunt.[23] They share the same Kazama Style martial arts background, but have vastly different personalities. They also share a mysterious power that seems to be able to dispel the power of the Devil Gene. Asuka is unaware that she has this power, and so far it has only been witnessed in her (non-canon) Tekken 5 ending. Asuka learns of Jun's fate, while escorting Jin to his birth home in Tekken 8.
  • Emilie "Lili" De Rochefort - Following Asuka's defeat of her in 'the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5, Lili deemed Asuka to be her rival. Asuka cannot stand Lili's conceited and stuck-up personality as well as her whimsical attitude. The two seem to be polar opposites: Asuka coming from a rather poor family, while Lili comes from a wealthy family; Asuka was trained in martial arts by her father since childhood, while Lili was self-taught in street fighting; and Asuka has a more rash, yet selfless personality as she fights for justice, while Lili has a graceful, yet spoiled personality as she fights for attention or personal interests. Lili also purchases Asuka's family dojo during the events of Tekken 7 while the dojo nears financial ruin. By Tekken 8, Asuka chooses to spend time with Lili, attending her tournament match to support her, and travelling with her to help Jin's cause. The two appear to have a much more friendly rivalry. Lili is Asuka's rival and companion in the (non-canon) Online Tekken Comic , and also her partner in Street Fighter X Tekken.
  • Feng Wei - The culprit behind her father's hospitalization prior to the events of Tekken 5. Asuka has since held a grudge against Feng Wei for destroying her father's dojo and putting him in the hospital, causing her family dojo to suffer a financial crisis.
  • Lei Wulong - The cop working on bulding a case against Feng. He informed Asuka of Feng Wei's participation in Tekken 5.
  • Alisa Bosconovitch - In Tekken 8, Asuka and Lili save Alisa from a JACK-8 during a battle at Yakushima. In the non-canon Online Tekken Comic, Alisa tried to kill Asuka. She later makes up with her and tells her the real purpose of her mission, cheerfully apologizing for the troubles she caused.
  • Raven - Asuka's opponent in the Tekken 5 demo. In Tekken 8, they both fight on Jin's side.
  • Leo Kliesen - In Tekken 8 they both fight for Jin against Kazuya. In the non-canon Online Tekken Comic, Leo is Asuka's friend.
  • Bob - In the non-canon Online Tekken Comic, Bob saved Asuka from being killed by Alisa.
  • Hwoarang - In Tekken 8, they canonically met each other in the spectator seats of the Coliseum of Fate in Italy, where Asuka was asked about her relation to Jin.

Etymology[]

  • The name Asuka means "to fly" () (asu) and "bird" ) (ka).
    • It was named after the Asuka river in Nara prefecture of Japan and this is because Katsuhiro Harada's parents live near there [1].
    • Fittingly, her default outfits feature a flying bird, her original outfit on the back and her Tekken 7 outfit on the left chest. When wearing her school uniform, she wears gloves which feature a flying bird.
  • Asuka's surname Kazama means "wind" () (kaze) and "interval" () (ma). Collectively, these kanji mean "while the wind is blowing". Kazama is a common Japanese surname.

Trivia[]

General:

  • In 2004, before releasing the game in the arcades, franchise developer Namco released images of three new characters as part of their Tekken 5 promotions. Amongst the new characters were Asuka, a Chinese martial arts master named Feng Wei, and a mysterious ninja named Raven.
    • Immediately afterwards, speculation began to spread about Asuka's role in the story and her possible relation to Jin Kazama.
  • Asuka's voice actress, Ryoko Shiraishi shares the same name with the singer who sang "Landscape Under the Ghost", the song that plays during the Tekken 2 credits roll, and the rearranged re-recorded version used in Tekken Tag Tournament 2.[24]
  • Asuka speaks with a Kansai dialect (Kansai is a region of western Japan encompassing major cities such as Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe). When she is annoyed, she commonly uses the words ドアホ (Do-aho meaning "super idiot") and しばいたる (shibaitaru which in kansai dialect means "to beat-up").
    • Harada said "She is typical of 'Japanese Osaka-city girl[s]'."[25]
  • Asuka was featured in the opening intro of every mainline Tekken game from her debut in Tekken 5 through to Tekken 6. She wore a different costume in each of these three openings.
  • It was revealed in Alisa's journal that Asuka is a substitute teacher at her father's dojo.[26]
  • Asuka is stated to be Jin's cousin in Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion's Scenario Campaign[27], her Tekken Tag Tournament 2 profile,[22] and one of Xiaoyu's win quotes in Street Fighter X Tekken;[28]; however, Harada-san has stated on Twitter that she and Jin's family relation is "not that simple."[5]
  • In the non-canonical Tekken the Pachislot 2nd, Asuka and Lili are in Mishima High alongside Ling Xiaoyu.

Tekken 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection:

  • Asuka's sub-boss is Feng Wei.
  • Asuka has two alternative costumes. Both of them are bought separately for 500,000 gold. One is a schoolgirl uniform, selectable by pressing the "Triangle" button, and the other is a geisha-like outfit, selectable by pressing the "Circle" button. In Dark Resurrection, these costumes are available from the start of the game, without having to purchase them.
    • Asuka's geisha-like outfit also gives her a tattoo on her inner left thigh that says 通天閣 (Tsūtenkaku). "Tsuutenkaku" is the name of a famous tower in Osaka, Asuka's hometown.
  • In Dark Resurrection, one of Asuka's customization items is Jun Kazama's hairstyle. She also has knee-high socks that are very similar to the ones that Jun wears with her Player One costume, with the only difference being that Asuka's are navy blue, while Jun's are pale blue.
  • It is implied that Asuka has the same ability as Jun to nullify the Devil Gene, as seen in her ending when she tries to wake Jin up and his devil attributes disappear.
  • In Tekken 5's trailer, Asuka has a few battle grunts that were never used in the released version.[29]

Tekken 6 and Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion:

  • Asuka's third outfit was designed by mangaka, Mamoru Nagano.
  • Asuka's Item Moves are a giant white paper fan and a bow and arrow.
  • Asuka is a boss at Kazama-Style Traditional Martial Arts Dojo.
  • In the Tekken 6 art book showing her 3P costume (the geisha-like outfit), she is seen choking Paul Phoenix with her scarf.
  • A plushie of Susumu Hori from the Bandai Namco series Mr. Driller can be found in the background of her prologue.
  • Her Stage 1 and Stage 2 opponents in the Arena mode are Lei Wulong and Feng Wei.
  • Multiple characters in Scenario Campaign state, directly or indirectly, that Asuka and Jin Kazama are cousins.[27]
  • On the official North American Tekken 6 website, Asuka was incorrectly identified as Jin's half-sister. This was corrected on the North American website, though the error was also present on the European website.[citation needed]

Tekken Tag Tournament 2:

  • If the player pairs up Asuka and Jin, a special win pose shows Asuka offering a handshake, but Jin does not react to her gesture and walks away instead. She then glares at him. Another win pose shows Asuka pointing at him accusingly, but Jin walks past her. Once again, she glares at him.
  • Asuka also shares a win pose with Lili, where they high-five each other too hard and hurt their hands. They also share a "Continue?" cut scene where both girls keep slapping each other until Asuka finally knocks Lili down.
  • Asuka's partners in the Ghost Battle (in order from lowest to highest rank) are Feng Wei, Jun Kazama, Miharu Hirano, Emilie De Rochefort, and Jin Kazama.
  • Her ending is the first scene of the connected endings between herself, Lili, Miharu, Kuma, Panda, Alisa, and Xiaoyu.
  • Asuka is portrayed by Vivian Nguyen in the "Girl Power" trailer.
  • Her item move has her swing a hammer downward to smash the opponent. If the opponent is not in range, they will still be stunned by the attack's shockwave.

Tekken 7/Fated Retribution:

  • One of her default win animations has been revamped. Asuka dusts off her hands before placing them on her hips and walking away from her opponent, satisfied. A close-up of her smiling face is shown.
  • In the early versions of Tekken 7, a glitch occurred if Asuka performed Falling Rain followed by a Rage Art when her opponent's life was depleted by Falling Rain's fall damage. After the Rage Art, the round will not immediately end, but neither the opponent nor Asuka will take damage for the rest of the round. Asuka would be guaranteed the victory as the set of circumstances involved in triggering the glitch ensured that she would always have more life than her opponent by the end of the round's timer.
  • Asuka's unique customization item, a perching swallow, is most likely a reference to the opening of Tekken 5, where the same bird passes by Asuka before she jumps off the building while riding her bicycle.

Tekken 8

  • Asuka's cap can be knocked off during gameplay. This was not possible in earlier builds of the game, including the first Closed Network Test.
  • Asuka is able to be customized to wear Lili's Player 1 outfit from this game.
  • Asuka has a special intro with Lili and Feng Wei.
    • Lili sarcastically asks Asuka what her next excuse for losing will be, only for Asuka to respond that those were supposed to her words. The pair have a small stare-off before beginning the fight.
    • Asuka begins whirling her arm claiming that she's ready to beat up Feng now that they've met. Less than amused, Feng only gestures for her to fight before parrying her attempt to punch him.
