TK8 Jun Stamp

Azazel (Arabic: عزازل Azāzil, Japanese: アザゼル Azazeru?) is the main antagonist of Tekken 6. Azazel is an ancient demon that was sealed away under the earth. It was foretold that it would awaken again in times of war and chaos. Azazel is the second Tekken villain, after Ogre, not to be a blood relation of the Mishima family, although it is connected to them through the Devil Gene.

Azazel remained alive by existing in a spiritual form within Zafina's arm after the events of Tekken 6 and during Tekken 7. He returned in his physical form briefly in Tekken 8 to serve as the catalyst for Kazuya Mishima's transformation into a more powerful Devil Kazuya.

Biography[]

Azazel is a demon that ruled over the heavens and earth[1] thousands of years ago. It was once known as the "Rectifier"[2] and is the progenitor of the Devil Gene; in ancient times, Azazel bestowed a fraction of its power to certain humans, giving them the ability to draw upon their desires and fears to access supernatural power and take on monstrous forms. These humans were known as devils and acted as Azazel's servants.[3]

At some point, humans overthrew Azazel, and Zafina's ancient ancestors imprisoned its spirit in the temple that was once built in its name, placing a magic seal to bind it within.[2] A prophecy was passed down among Zafina's clan that stated that Azazel would awaken and destroy the world when "two dark stars" clashed in battle.[4]

Thousands of years after its imprisonment, the seal binding Azazel broke due to fighting between Kazuya Mishima and his son, Jin Kazama, both of whom were carriers of the Devil Gene. Jin and Kazuya were the "two dark stars" referenced in the prophecy.[2] Azazel began to speak telepathically with Jin, and told him that it would achieve physical form if the world was filled with enough negative energy. Jin came to believe that destroying Azazel would rid him of the Devil Gene and save humanity from a path of self-destruction; to this end, he used the Mishima Zaibatsu to stoke all-out war across the globe.[5] Kazuya, who was controlling G Corporation from the shadows, stepped up to oppose Jin and the Zaibatsu.[6] Their war caused Azazel to grow in power. Zafina noticed this, and warned Jin to stop his warring before it was too late. Jin told her that Azazel was already stirring and that it was too late to stop it.[2]

Eventually, Kazuya, Jin, and Lars Alexandersson, a defector from Jin's Tekken Force, converged on Azazel's Temple. Lars fought Kazuya, who subsequently left the temple, and then confronted Azazel in its chamber. Azazel told Lars that humanity needed to atone for its sins and that it would be the one to subjugate them.[7] Lars fought it and appeared to defeat it, making it disappear in a flash of light.[8]

However, Azazel reemerged outside the temple in its golden form following a fight between Jin and Lars. Jin took his chance to challenge Azazel, and rushed it, using the power of his Devil Gene to punch through its chest despite its warning that a fatal attack would destroy Jin as well. They both fell into a deep hole.[5] Azazel was assumed to be dead, but Jin was found alive shortly after, still afflicted by the Devil Gene.[9]

Unbeknownst to most, Azazel's spirit survived the confrontation with Jin. Zafina sensed this and used a ritual to seal its spirit within her body. However, Azazel's power grew stronger even inside the seal. Zafina knew Azazel would resurface if Jin and Kazuya's devil blood was not eradicated. Seeking to efficiently hunt Jin and Kazuya down and thus destroy Azazel for good, Zafina made contact with the Sirius Marksmen.[10]

Six months later, Zafina was lured to an arena where the King of Iron Fist Tournament 8 was taking place. Here, Kazuya Mishima broke the seal on Zafina's arm, allowing Azazel to take on its physical form once again. Kazuya defeated Azazel and absorbed his power into his body, reducing Azazel to a barely conscious spirit contained within him.[11]

Personality[]

Azazel embodies its "Rectifier" moniker; it arrogantly believes itself to be above mortal understanding and sees itself as a neutral agent of justice and judgement, meting out destruction on humanity in proportion to the destruction that humans themselves have caused. It has a strong belief in destiny and suggests that humanity's destruction is inevitable.

Appearance[]

In its own physical form, Azazel is a large bipedal creature with red eyes and gray skin which sometimes appears to glow purple. It has a pointed snout with an overbite, sharp teeth, and large ridged horns extending from the back of its head. Its hands have five clawed digits and it has bird-like feet. Azazel has curved spikes on its back and a long, segmented tail that ended in a pincer-like structure in Tekken 6; its tail tip instead possesses an array of crystalline purple spikes along its top and bottom in Tekken 8. Azazel has spikes on its forearms and hips which sharp crystalline structures have formed around. It has symmetrical golden designs on each of its shoulders and there is a glowing purple orb inside its chest. Azazel also has an alternate physical form where it appears with a golden sheen covering its body.

Azazel affects physical changes to Zafina's body when its spirit is imprisoned inside her, giving her left hand a purple, crystalline appearance. Additionally, when Zafina is fighting, her left hand and forearm shift to resemble Azazel's in size and structure during some attacks.

Outfits[]

From its first appearance in Tekken 6, Azazel has worn a nemes, an usekh collar, and a loincloth, all made from gold and decorated with blue, teal and red accents. It also wears a gold band around each of its calves. In Tekken 8, Azazel additionally wears the remnants of a tattered black cloak, as well as fraying black strips of fabric wrapped around its torso and limbs.

Story[]

Tekken 6[]

Summary of In-Game Events:
Azazel long ago reigned over the heavens and earth as their ruler[1] and was known as the "Rectifier".[2] At some point, humans rebelled and overthrew Azazel. Azazel was imprisoned in a tomb behind a magical seal by Zafina's ancient ancestors.[2] It was imprisoned in the very temple that was once built in its name. A prophecy was passed down among Zafina's clan that stated that Azazel would awaken and destroy the world when "two dark stars" clashed in battle.[4]

Azazel stirs due to conflict between Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima.[2] It begins to communicate telepathically with Jin. Jin comes to believe that Azazel is the root of the Devil Gene and that destroying the demon will eliminate the devil curse from himself and Kazuya. Despite the efforts of Lars Alexandersson and many others, Jin successfully causes Azazel to awaken by using the Mishima Zaibatsu to initiate and sustain global warfare.

Once awake, Azazel faces Lars Alexandersson and Raven in battle. During the fight, Azazel reveals that it is known as the "Rectifier of All Things", and that its resurrection is a result of the sins of mankind. It states that the time has come for it to destroy humanity so that they can atone for having brought the world to the brink of destruction. Despite its claims of power, Azazel is defeated, and, too injured to continue the battle, seemingly self-destructs.[8]

However, as Jin and Lars fight outside the temple, Azazel bursts out from the ground beneath them, stronger than ever before. Jin explains to Lars that Azazel can only be destroyed by someone that carries the Devil Gene. Jin's Devil Gene partially activates and he runs toward Azazel. Azazel fires several beams of energy at Jin, only for them to be deflected away. Jin punches his fist straight through Azazel's chest and the two of them plummet into the abyss below. The outcome of the battle is not shown, but it is assumed that Azazel has been destroyed. Jin is later seen in the desert with his devil brand still intact however, indicating that the devil curse has not been lifted with Azazel's apparent defeat.[9]

Tekken 7[]

In Zafina's story in Tekken 7, it is revealed that, although the demon was seemingly destroyed, Azazel barely escaped extinction in spirit form. Learning this, Zafina successfully performs a ritual to contain the beast within her. However, Azazel's power within her gradually begins to increase, leading Zafina to believe that if she does not finish the two evil stars, Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima, for good, Azazel will be resurrected again.[10]

Tekken 8[]

Summary of In-Game Events:
Zafina is lured to an arena in Italy, where The King of Iron Fist Tournament is taking place. Kazuya Mishima appears and makes clear that his intention all along was to bring her to him, so that he might take the power of Azazel. Kazuya breaks the seal on Zafina's arm, allowing Azazel to manifest physically once more. Initially, Azazel believes Kazuya's intentions by freeing it, are to put himself in Azazel's favor. Kazuya reveals, however, that he instead intends to defeat Azazel and absorb its power to add to his own. Kazuya is successful in this endeavor, and Azazel's conscious spirit is sealed within Kazuya.[11] In the aftermath of this, Claudio Serafino succeeds in weakening Kazuya. This causes Kazuya to feel Azazel's resistance as the demon fights him for control.[12]

Some time after, a clash between Angel Jin and True Devil Kazuya results in the two of them being purified of their Devil Genes, apparently destroying Azazel for good.[13]

Tekken_6_Azazel_VS._Azazel

Tekken 6 Azazel VS. Azazel

Azazel has the ability to summon crystal spikes similar to stalagmites from the ground to attack the opponent, as well as to keep the opponent at a distance, and summons numerous crystal scarabs which serve as a projectile. Azazel has some moves that are similar to other bosses in the series, such as a stun (similar to Jinpachi Mishima's stun attack) and the ability to fire lasers (similar to Devil, Angel, and Devil Jin's) in an attack resembling True Ogre's fire breath. Azazel also possesses a tail sweep attack resembling Roger Jr.'s. However, Azazel whips its tail twice in a row. It can also attack its opponents from afar by lunging at them, knocking the opponent down.

Instead of relying on a normal guard, Azazel instead relies on an auto guard that blocks all types of attacks. Azazel also cannot be thrown. The few times that Azazel is vulnerable is either mid-attack or when recovering after performing an attack. Due to Azazel's significantly large hurtbox, longer and more damaging combos are possible, and it is even possible to float Azazel into a combo even when the boss is grounded.

Quotes[]

Character Relationships[]

  • Jin Kazama - Jin learned about Azazel from Azazel itself when it began to communicate with him telepathically. Jin followed Azazel's commands to bring it back to life, but intended to kill it and thus destroy the threat it posed and remove the Devil Gene from the world. Jin defeated Azazel, but its spirit survived the encounter.
  • Kazuya Mishima - It was prophesied that two evil stars would clash and awaken Azazel. Jin is one evil star and Kazuya is the other. Azazel viewed itself as the creator of Kazuya and Jin, and considered them its minions, as they had filled the world with negative energy just like it had wished. Kazuya had at some point learned of Azazel and tried to obtain its power, but was stopped at its temple by Lars and Raven.
  • Lars Alexandersson - Defeated Azazel initially, but it was revealed by Jin that only a Devil Gene wielder can truly vanquish Azazel.
  • Raven - Raven accompanied Lars to Azazel's chamber.
  • Zafina - Her clan protected the chamber Azazel resided in since ancient times. The seal of the chamber was broken when Kazuya and Jin began fighting. In Tekken 7, Zafina has sealed Azazel's spirit within herself, and has the ability to use some of Azazel's powers.
  • Mokujin - Mokujin was awoken by Azazel's power in Tekken 6.
  • Claudio Serafino - Claudio attempted to purify Kazuya Mishima using his Sirius-Style Exorcism Sorcery. This weakened Kazuya enough for Azazel to begin vying for control in his body.

Etymology[]

  • Azazel literally means "hell" (עזאזל) in Hebrew. The term refers to a mountain from which scapegoats - goats ceremonially imbued with the essence of the Hebrew people's sins - were cast as part of the original Yom Kippur rituals. Azazel is also associated with a fallen angel with the same name. It is thought that this is a false cognate of the mountain Azazel ("ruggedness of God").[14]

Trivia[]

General:

  • Azazel's appearance and ornamentation draws heavily on Ancient Egyptian mythology and culture.
  • The beetles which Azazel uses as projectiles are also callbacks to Ancient Egyptian mythology. They are likely sacred scarabs, which were considered symbols of the god Khepri.
  • While Azazel's height is not mentioned, judging from its size next to other characters, it is likely over 10 feet tall.
    • If this measure is accurate, it would make Azazel tallest character in the Tekken series, with the possible exception of NANCY-MI847J.
  • It may be possible that Azazel, as the apparent origin of the Devil Gene, is connected in some way to the Hachijo Clan, the bloodline that gave Kazuya and Jin their Devil Gene.

Tekken 6 & Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion:

  • When taking damage, parts of Azazel's face or limbs may become visibly damaged, such as the nose or a claw being cut cleanly off. These damaged parts will regenerate over time from the locusts swarming the affected area. This feature is only visual, and does not change anything in the fight.
  • During the original Tekken 6, Azazel summoned flat, earth pillars for attacks. In Bloodline Rebellion, this was changed to claw-like pillars.
  • If playing as Julia Chang in Azazel's stage in Scenario Campaign, she will remark on the similarities between Azazel and Ogre.
  • If a player has upwards of 10 million points in Arcade Mode, a different version of Azazel (known as Gold Azazel due to its coloration) is fought instead of normal Azazel. Beating Gold Azazel in arcade mode yields 20,000G, but in the console versions, it is 2,000,000G.
    • Gold Azazel is the form Azazel takes after it resurrects and confronts Jin at the end of Scenario Campaign.
  • Azazel can be made playable on the PlayStation Portable version of Tekken 6 via CWCheat or NitePr.
    • On the PSP, players can fight Azazel as "Dark Azazel" via CWCheat, which is just Azazel in permanent Rage Mode who takes much less damage than the Gold Azazel. Dark Azazel combines properties of NANCY-MI847J (1000 HP, immunity to hitstun, can be hit with certain attacks that only hit airborne opponents such as Devil Jin's Air Inferno, will end the fight after one round even if the game is set to three or more rounds) with Azazel's moveset. Unlike NANCY, Dark Azazel is still capable of 'blocking' (like regular Azazel, it has no blocking animation and it will not receive damage while 'blocking'). This form is far more difficult to defeat than either regular Azazel or NANCY.
    • On PlayStation 3, Azazel is playable via a User Cheat (Code Unique) cheat device using the "Tekken 6 Rebirth Mod", made by the same developer who developed the play as boss codes for Tekken 6 PSP. Azazel's Golden Version is also playable, though at random. When fighting as Azazel vs. Azazel, the CPU version of Azazel will be invincible due to having no secondary costume, though this does not happen in the PSP version of Tekken 6. Both Azazel and NANCY-MI847J can be playable in all modes, including Campaign Mode - however, neither of them have their own dialogues.[citation needed]
  • In Tekken 6, Azazel is one of the two characters who both speaks English and has English subtitles, Miguel being the other one. This is due to Azazel's distorting, demonic voice being hard to understand.
  • Azazel had a different portrait used for the loading screen in the original Tekken 6.
  • In the arcade version, Azazel is black,[15] but in the console versions, it is purple. As it suffers damage, Azazel turns more vibrant shades of red, and finally gold in its most powerful form.
  • Azazel appears in Hwoarang, Baek Doo San, Ganryu, Wang Jinrei, Mokujin, Yoshimitsu, Devil Jin, Sergei Dragunov, and Raven's Arena Mode ending cutscenes.
    • The orb in Azazel's chest seems to possess the ability to afflict humans with powers and physical changes that resemble those undergone by people who possess the Devil Gene; this can be seen in Hwoarang and Ganryu's ending cutscenes. The orb can also been seen absorbing or nullifying Devil Jin's powers in his ending cutscene, causing him to revert to Jin.

Tekken 7: Fated Retribution

  • Footage of Azazel from Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion can be seen in Tekken 7: Fated Retribution's Story Mode. Azazel is also mentioned several times.

Other:

  • Azazel appears in Tekken Pachislot 2nd.
  • Azazel's skull appears within the pages of an Archers of Sirius book in Tekken Pachislot 4, where it is described as the root of all evil.
