Tekken Devil Within Screen

Devil Within is an action adventure mini-game bundled with Tekken 5.

The storyline revolves around Jin Kazama and his devil form, Devil Jin. It is similar to the Tekken Force modes in Tekken 3 and 4, but unlike them, Devil Within does not allow the player to select their desired character and it has a story line to accompany the fighting, which the "Tekken Force" modes lacked.

"Tekken: Devil Within is a five-stage action game based around the character Jin Kazama. As you progress through each stage, you encounter various platform and puzzle elements built to keep you from completing your mission. Aside from learning more about Jin's past, finishing Tekken: Devil Within opens up Devil Jin as a playable character, and it's an alternate way to earn specific customize items. You also earn G (money) for playing through Tekken:Devil Within, allowing you to score even more costume pieces with greater ease."[1]

Story[]

Devil Within purports to take place during the events of Tekken 5. Just after the tournament,[2] Jin has heard that his mother, Jun Kazama, may be alive. He then heads to a laboratory of G Corporation, run by their subsidiary "Medicern", to find her. There he encounters super-soldiers, highly advanced robots, JACKs, including a a modified Gun Jack model, and clones of Heihachi Mishima, all of are encountered within the laboratory complex. The Heihachi clones are fought in a room that has been decorated like a child's bedroom, possibly indicating that it may have been used for psychological experiments on Kazuya during his time as a G Corp experiment.

As Jin gets deeper in the lab he starts to lose control his devil form. Once Jin transformed into Devil Jin, something is awakened, something that he did not want to encounter. Jin keeps searching for his mother, but he does not find her anywhere in the lab. Instead, Jin enters the ancient ruins on which the lab was built. There, Jin confronts his worst nightmare, True Ogre again. Jin manages to defeat Ogre, but he escapes into the ruins.

As Jin exits the ancient ruins he finds himself in a mystical location, which appears to be an alien spaceship. Jin has to fight enemies, he has never fought in the past. Jin then manages to come face-to-face with Ogre. After being defeated for the second time, Ogre reveals his third form, Monstrous Ogre. Monstrous Ogre is bigger than his previous form and he has a different skin tone (Monstrous Ogre is more yellow than green). Jin must defeat this form, as well.

Trivia[]

  • It is unknown if Devil Within is canon or not to the main games' storyline which has led to some debate, but it is stated in Jin Kazama's prologue that he sets out on a journey with destiny as his only guide to end the evil that was plaguing him. It can be concluded that Jin's journey was the Devil Within storyline. Devil Within itself states that it begins after Heihachi is attacked in Hon-Maru, implying that Devil Within tells the story of Jin's absence between the end of the 4th tournament and the start of the 5th. On the official Tekken page, it states that Devil Within is set within Tekken 5, and seems to imply that it takes place during the events of Tekken 5's story.[3]
  • The ruins that the G Corporation laboratories are built over is implied to be Ogre's temple, with parts of the ruin levels resembling the Aztec ruins of the Ogre's Temple stage, and references in the game's text to people sealing Ogre within these ruins. If the facility is built over this location, then it means that the labs are in Mexico. The only other reference to the labs' location in the game are that they are a 'foreign' facility, meaning Jin had to leave Japan in order to search them.
  • Stage 2 bosses are clones of Heihachi fighting in a child's room, which somehow suggests that Kazuya probably had to face his childhood fear, being mistreated by Heihachi as a child, while he was a test subject in G Corporation, before he became CEO. They may have done this for psychological reasons to better activate his Devil Gene for study.
    • The room features large fluffy sheep on the floor, and walls painted sky blue with fluffy clouds and yellow stars. The room is still clearly intended to be a medical facility however, with its architecture matching the rest of the medical areas Jin has been fighting through.
    • If this facility was indeed built to experiment upon Kazuya, it would explain why it was built upon ruins, proximity to which activates the Devil Gene.
  • Jin's loss of control of his Devil Gene throughout this game, coupled with the title Devil Within, could indicate a descent into his own loss of faculty as the game progresses. The game stages also become progressively more bizarre, with Jin having to defeat the (canonically dead) Ogre who killed his mother, twice more in this game, and also featuring clones of Heihachi who betrayed him, and alien abductions. It is possible that the player sees the game through the eyes of Jin who is an unreliable narrator due to his loss of control over his devil side as he searches desperately for his mother.
    • The game narrative itself also follows Jin's past traumas, being a search for his mother, before having to refight his old enemies in order - Heihachi and then Ogre, all the while fighting for control over himself and his devil.
  • The laboratories appear to be owned by a pharmaceutical wing of G Corporation that operates under the name "Medicern". Their brand logo can be seen on the doors and many of the boxes in the first two levels of Devil Within.
  • The clone Heihachis feature serial numbers printed on their hakama (the first clone has '0025' printed on him), and electronic metal cuffs on their wrists. They do not have the scar across their chests that Heihachi received from Kazuya at the end of the first Tekken game.
  • Jin gradually loses control of his Devil Gene the closer he gets to Ogre. A similar phenomenon was seen in Tekken 6, where proximity to Azazel seemed to activate his Devil Gene. In Tekken 6 Jin also spoke of being able to sense Azazel.
  • After beating Devil Within under medium difficulty and collecting all the Evil Symbols, the player can play as Devil Jin through the entire game by holding down L2, SELECT and R3 while selecting a stage or starting a new game. The Devil bar will become the laser bar. The downside of this code is that enemies die faster, lowering the chance at getting a high combo.
  • In the 4th level of the 'Devil Within' there is a door covered with rocks, through the door there will find a little spaceship that will unlock the Starblade in Arcade History mode.
  • The theme of Stage 1 and during boss fights is a remix of Jin's theme in Tekken 3.
  • Another way of unlocking the Cathedral and Final Stages is to unlock Devil Jin without finishing Devil Within which is done by finishing Time Attack with Jin or doing 200 arcade battles.
  • In this mode, Jin fights using his old Mishima Style Fighting Karate, though some of his moves, such as his Evil Intent, Spinning Flare Kick, Double Lift Kick and Thrusting Uppercut, are from his post-Tekken 3 fighting style: Traditional (Kyokushin) Karate. These moves are part of his combo moveset. His Devil form, meanwhile, has access to advanced Mishima techniques like Hell Scraper, Roundhouse to Triple Spin Kicks, and laser attacks.
  • The theme of Stage 3 was originally going to be used as the theme for the Jungle stage in Tekken 4, as seen in a Beta Footage Test of the game.[4]
  • If Jin defeats an enemy while in his devil form, the enemy will disintegrate into black feathers while doing a K.O. animation.
