Eddy Gordo (エディ・ゴルド Edi Gorudo?) is a playable capoeira fighter within the Tekken series of fighting games. He made his debut in Tekken 3 and returned for all subsequent installments. He learned Capoeira from his master.

Biography[]

Eddy was born to a one of the richest families in Brazil and was on track to inherit the family business. In Eddy's late teens, his father was working to destroy Brazil's drug cartel.

When Eddy was 19, he came home from school to find his father shot and dying. Eddy's father told Eddy to falsely confess to killing him because prison would be the safest place for him now. Eddy obeyed his father's last wish and was incarcerated.

Prison life was difficult, and Eddy hungered for revenge against his father's killers. During a prison riot, he noticed an old man using Capoeira. Eddy became his student, becoming a Capoeira master in the eight years he trained under the old man.[4] During this time, the old man told Eddy that he had a granddaughter, and asked Eddy to pass the art of Capoeira on to her.[5]

Upon being released from prison, Eddy learned of the Mishima Zaibatsu and The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3. He entered the tournament in the hopes of persuading the Zaibatsu to assist in his quest for revenge.[4]

At some point during or after the tournament, Eddy infiltrated the home of a drug boss and interrogated him over the identity of his father's killer. The man alleged that Kazuya Mishima, the former leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu, was involved.[6] [7]

Eddy found his master's granddaughter, Christie, shortly after The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3. For two years, he taught her Capoeira as he had promised. She developed into an impressive fighter. One day, however, Eddy set off to take revenge on who he understood to be responsible for his father's death. His disappearance prompted Christie to enter The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4 in search of him.[5]

Eddy reunited with Christie at some point during or after the tournament. His master was released from prison; however, the old man's health had declined. Eddy had him hospitalized and was told that his master had an incurable illness and that his life expectancy was six months. The advanced technology of the Mishima Zaibatsu was the only hope Eddy and Christie had of finding a cure. Eddy and Christie both entered The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 to this end.[8]

Neither Eddy nor Christie were able to win the tournament. Without informing Christie, Eddy approached Jin Kazama, the new leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu, and pleaded with him to save his master. Jin agreed to do so on the condition that Eddy joined Tekken Force, the Zaibatsu's private militia. Eddy agreed to these terms and became involved in warfare across the globe on the Mishima Zaibatsu's behalf. He entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 to take out any threats to Jin.[9] Later, Jin accused Eddy's defense of being weak due to him losing two strategic positions in the war.[10] Eddy was later confronted and defeated by Lars Alexandersson and Alisa Bosconovitch at an elite Tekken Force base.[11]

Eddy's master died despite his efforts to save him. Eddy reunited with Christie at his burial, where she expressed her anger with him over his absence. Furious that the drastic measures he'd taken to get treatment for his master were in vain, Eddy severed ties with the Mishima Zaibatsu.[12]

At some point, Eddy opened an orphanage in Brazil. He taught the children in his care Capoeira. One day, however, he left to pursue revenge against Kazuya Mishima.[13] Eddy traveled to G Corporation's Millenium Tower in an attempt to find Kazuya, who was ruling G Corp from the shadows. He was confronted instead by Lucky Chloe, an idol working with G Corp.[14]

Personality[]

Eddy is generally cool-headed and laid back. He also seems to be very loyal, going out of his way to repay the kindness offered to him by the capoeira master.

Appearance[]

Eddy is a Brazilian man with dreadlocks styled in a ponytail. Some of his dreadlocks are blond on the tips. He wears an eyebrow piercing as well as rings and an earring. In the vast majority of games, Eddy's outfit uses the colors of the flag of Brazil, his country of origin.

Story[]

Tekken 3[]

Manual, NTSC, Manual, PAL & Manual, PlayStation Classic
Son of a wealthy industrialist in Brazil, Eddy seeks revenge against the "Organization" that took his father's life and unjustly put him in prison. Eddy joined the Tournament with the intention of taking over the Mishima Financial Empire so that he can use its resources against the Organization.[15]

Official Strategy Guide
From riches to rags... Eddy was born into one of the richest families in Brazil. Ever since he was a small boy, he knew he would one day take over the family business. He was well liked in his home town because he was a hard worker who treated others as his equals.

One day, when he was 19, Eddy came home from school to find his father shot and dying. He recalled that his father had been unusually nervous and fearful in recent weeks.

Eddy's father was working to destroy the drug cartel in Brazil at the time. His untimely death occurred just when he had obtained enough evidence to put the kingpins away for good. In his last breaths, Eddy's father told him, "Now is not the right time to fight. Falsely admit to the crime and hide in prison. Only there will you be safe." Eddy went along with his father's last wish and the model student went from a life of luxury to incarceration as a murderer.

Prison life was hell and not a day went by that Eddy didn't vow to get even with his father's killers. One day during a prison riot, he watched an old man with great power fight using a technique he called Capoeira. For eight years, Eddy practiced until he became a master and could be considered a lethal weapon.

Upon his release from prison, Eddy heard about the "King of Iron Fist Tournament 3" and the Mishima Financial Empire. He decided to enter the tournament, believing he could persuade the MFE to help him seek his long-awaited revenge.[4]

Tekken 3 - Eddy Gordo ending

Ending Description, "Fixer"
A limo rolls up to a mansion and a man steps out (he is implied to be connected to the drug cartel Eddy's father was attempting to take down). Eddy watches the man's movements from a window. Later, Eddy breaks into the man's mansion, taking out his security guard and then interrogating the man on the floor. The druglord points Eddy to a desk. Eddy sits at the desk, looking down at three photographs of Kazuya Mishima, who is implied to be his father's killer (despite Kazuya himself having been presumed dead for 19 years at the time of the murder).

Tekken 4[]

Summary of In-Game Events
Although Eddy Gordo was a playable character in Tekken 4, he was not canonically a participant in the tournament. It is implied that Eddy has gone missing at the time of the fourth tournament to seek vengeance against the person responsible for the death of his father. Eddy's student (and also the granddaughter of his master), Christie Monteiro, entered The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4 hoping to find Eddy.

Christie has defeated Heihachi Mishima and won the tournament. The audience is cheering for her, and people begin walking to her, taking photos of her and complimenting her on her victory. One man starts to interview her about her victory, but Christie is disinterested, her win seemingly bringing her no closer to finding Eddy. As a man approaches her to award her the winner's trophy, Christie looks through the crowd and sees Eddy, who has a sling on one of his arms. Christie rushes out of the ring and runs towards him, calling his name. Upon reaching him, Christie hugs him, and Eddy returns the embrace with his uninjured arm. Christie says, "Eddy..." then closes her eyes and smiles.

Tekken 5 Eddy Interludes

Prologue
Eddy Gordo. A legendary Capoeira prodigy.

Eddy's master was set to be freed after a long prison sentence. However, his master had become a frail old man. This was not the master he once knew.

Eddy had his master hospitalized. He was told that his master was terminally ill, but a cure might be possible with technology from the Mishima Zaibatsu.

Upon taking his master to a hospital, Eddy was told his master had an incurable illness and had less than six months to live. However, it may be possible to discover a cure if they had access to the technology and resources of the Mishima Zaibatsu.

A week later, Eddy enters The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 to find a cure for his master.[8]

Tekken 6[]

Eddy failed to win The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5. He pleaded with Jin, who had become the new head of the Mishima Zaibatsu, to help him save his mentor. After a moment's contemplation, Jin agreed to help develop a medical treatment for Eddy's mentor in exchange for Eddy joining the Tekken Force and reporting to him. Eddy knew nothing about the Tekken Force, other than it was a private military outfit, but agreed to join if it meant saving his master.

Eddy became a member of the Tekken Force and carried out plans of destruction around the world. Even though he knew the consequences of his actions, Eddy was unable to leave the Tekken Force.

When the Mishima Zaibatsu announces The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6, Eddy enters the tournament as a member of the Tekken Force in order to eliminate those who would threaten Jin.[9]

Summary of In-Game Events
Eddy appears in a cutscene with Jin and Nina following Yggdrasil's raid on a Mishima Zaiabatsu laboratory. Jin tells Eddy he has lost two lost key strategic positions in the war because his defense was weak. He reminds Eddy that he's done his part in providing the means to saving Eddy's master's life, and Eddy agrees to uphold his end of the deal and continue serving in the Tekken Force.[10] Later, Eddy is encountered and defeated by Lars Alexandersson and Alisa Bosconovitch at an elite Tekken Force base.[11]

In a graveyard, Christie stands overlooking her grandfather's coffin that has yet to be buried. She places both hands together and sheds a tear. Eddy walks up beside her and stands next to her. Christie turns to look at him, then steps in front of him and slaps him in the face, asking him where he's been and telling him he was too late. She places her hands and head on his chest and cries. Eddy clenches his fist. He rips a pin denoting his involvement with the Mishima Zaibatsu off of his suit and throws it to the ground, breaking its surface, implying a severance of his ties with Jin Kazama and Tekken Force.

What did she mean by 'old man'? Confused and irritated by her appearance and disrespectful tone, but aware of the threat she posed, Eddy prepared to fight.[14]

Ending Description

Back at the orphanage, Eddy begins to leave with a packed bag. The children beg him not to go, but he tells them there is something he must do. A child asks Eddy if he is out to find the man who killed his father. Eddy just tells the child that he will be back and that they must keep up with their training. Christie arrives just after Eddy's departure and asks the children of Eddy's whereabouts. She gives the children the same advice Eddy gave them during his instruction earlier, then leaves in a hurry. Meanwhile, Eddy sits in a taxi.

Gameplay[]

Eddy is a tricky character that has more technicality than he lets on. While he appears to be "beginner-friendly", Eddy has to be played in a very unpredictable way. With fast strikes, and two main stances that start his aggressive mix-up capabilities, Eddy can become a very formidable opponent if he is not figured out. Eddy is easy to pick up, hard to master fighter, with an emphasis on how creative the player can be on offense.

Fighting Style[]

Eddy fights using Capoeira, the Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports, and music.

Character Relationships[]

Trivia[]

General:

  • Eddy is considered a master; the default color of his cords (a sign of rank in Capoeira) is white. In certain capoeira groups, a white-colored cord is the highest rank attained. In Tekken 8, his cord is changed to red.
  • Originally a female Capoeira martial artist was going to be introduced in Tekken 3 but the possible graphics at the time weren't considered good enough for the female Namco wanted in the game, so Eddy was created instead. Christie was later introduced in the following game, Tekken 4.
  • There has been some debate on whether Eddy and Christie have been good for the art of Capoeira. On one hand, they have popularized the Brazilian martial art, but on the other, they are adding to the misconceptions about the art. Capoeira still has strong underlying philosophies which haven't been separated to create a corporate sport, like what has happened to most martial arts.
  • Gordo, in Portuguese and Spanish respectively, means "fat".
  • Eddy Gordo, Christie and Tiger Jackson share the same motion actor, Mestre Marcelo Caveirinha.
  • Since Christie's debut, up until Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Eddy did not have an ending animation of his own. Instead, he shared his endings with Christie.
    • Eddy had also never spoken in any of his endings up until Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
    • Possibly due to Christie being planned as the initial Capoeira fighter for Tekken 3 and therefore would have her "replace" Eddy in later games. However, due to popularity as well as his plot/drive, Eddy once again became the sole Capoeira fighter for Tekken 7.
  • Eddy is mentioned in comedian Dane Cook's skit about the time he saw a guy getting hit by a car ("He gets hit right in his center of gravity, that sends you flipping through the air like Eddy Gordo from Tekken when somebody doesn't know how to do combos and they're just hitting the buttons randomly...").
  • The word "Faisca" (meaning "Spark" in Portuguese) is written in white on the chest and the sides of the legs on Eddy's Capoeira uniform from Tekken 5 to Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
  • From Tekken 3 to Tekken Tag Tournament, Eddy used punches when mounting over an opponent in the generic tackle. Likely due to him being a palette swap of Christie, this was changed to instead be slaps in Tekken 4. Since several of his attacks are slaps rather than punches, this change was kept in succeeding games even after he and Christie were split, and Eddy is the only male character that uses slaps in a tackle.
  • In Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament, Eddy's default stance would continuously adjust to track a sidestepping opponent even when they were directly behind him and made it near impossible to hit him from a side angle if he simply stood still. This was eventually removed in Tekken 4.

Tekken 3:

  • Eddy Gordo's bosses in the Tekken Force side game are (in order of appearance) Julia Chang, Gun Jack, Tiger Jackson, and Heihachi Mishima.
  • There is a glitch with Eddy (and Tiger) when he is used as a Practice Mode dummy. All attacks performed on Eddy are read as a combo string, and it doesn't reset until the player knocks him down or into a full crouch.
  • In an early arcade scan[17], Eddy was not even named at the time, and another magazine[18] claimed that he was named "Rally Jackson", likely one of the possible names meant for Tiger Jackson. In the manual, Eddy Gordo's first name is accidentally spelled "Eddie" in every language. However, his first name is spelled correctly in the brief biography.

Tekken 4:

  • Eddy is selectable by pressing Triangle (2) while on Christie on the Character Select screen.
  • Eddy's Stage 7 sub-boss is Kazuya Mishima.
  • Despite Tekken 4 introducing spoken dialogue for all the characters, Eddy was never heard talking in the game, specifically in intro and win animations and his ending shared with Christie. The grunts he makes in-game are reused from Tekken 3.

Tekken 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection:

  • Eddy is selectable by first purchasing Christie's alternate costume in the Customize section. Afterwards, he can be chosen by pressing Triangle (2) or Circle (4) while on Christie on the Character Select screen.
  • This is the first game where Eddy speaks.
  • Strangely, when playing as Christie, the player can see the camera move while Christie dances. But when playing as Eddy, the camera remains still while Eddy dances. This may be due to a mistake made while the game was in development.
  • Eddy's sub-bosses at Stage 4 and Stage 7 are Christie and Kazuya, respectively.
  • From Dark Resurrection onward, Eddy has his own section on the Character Select screen.
  • This is the last game where Eddy can perform the Bitch Slaps against Nina or Anna.
  • He can only be chosen by Player 1.

Tekken 6 and Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion:

  • In an early Tekken 6 image, Eddy appeared to be returning as a costume swap for Christie Monteiro. However, this was revealed to be false, as Tekken 6's Character Select screen shows that Eddy has his own character space.
  • Eddy can be customized to resemble Tiger Jackson.
  • In the Scenario Campaign mode, Eddy is shown in a cutscene with Nina and Jin after Lars attacked the lab Alisa was in. Eddy tells Jin that he'll hold his part of the deal for saving his master's life.
  • In the Scenario Campaign mode, Eddy serves as the boss of the "Tekken Force 4th Special Forces Operational Group Command" stage.
  • When the player plays as Christie in Eddy's boss stage, it is not to find Eddy and her grandfather who have mysteriously gone missing, but to her discovery that Eddy works for the Mishima Zaibatsu as a Special Operations Unit for the Tekken Force, which angers Christie for his motives in joining the Zaibatsu as she angrily states to him, "Eddy, you're working for Mishima? I don't believe this."
  • Eddy's first three opponents in Scenario Campaign's "Arena" mode are Lars, Anna and Kazuya.
  • This is the first game where Eddy can perform the Headbutt Carnival.
  • When customizing Eddy in the Soulful Afro, Soulful Shirt, Soulful Jeans, and Soulful Shoes, he can dance during matches if the player inputs 2+3+4.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2:

  • This is the first game in which Eddy speaks in his native Portuguese.
  • Unlike other characters, his character select icon reuses his CG art from Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion.
  • It is possible to customize Eddy to resemble Tiger Jackson.
  • Eddy and Christie's endings are animated in a paint-like style.
  • Christie's ending directly continues from Eddy's.

Tekken 7 and Tekken 7: Fated Retribution :

  • Eddy has unique outfits that seem to be related to dancing; a funk-themed outfit that represents disco and a breakdance outfit that represents hip-hop.
  • Eddy has a new win animation where he looks into the sky worrying for his late master.
  • Eddy is the only character that can still do a Rising Cross Chop and a Spring Kick from a Backward Roll, albeit from his Negativa stance.
