Ancient Ogre (エンシェント・オーガ Enshento Ōga?), originally known simply as Ogre (オーガ Ōga?), is the first form of the creature known as Toshin (闘神 Tōshin?, literally "God of Fighting"), and is the main antagonist of Tekken 3 and Tekken 5's Devil Within mode.

Ogre is the Tekken series' first main villain who is not a member of the Mishima family, though his powers are equal to those of the Mishima and Kazama Clans.

Biography

Ogre was a living weapon of war left on Earth by extraterrestrial beings in ancient times. It had an inherant understanding of the make-up of living and artificial beings and was able to absorb them.[2] At some point after its arrival on Earth, Ogre became inactive in a temple in Central America.

Prior to the events of Tekken, Heihachi Mishima sought a Native American treasure, a pendant rumored to contain the power to awaken and control Ogre. The treasure was guarded by the Chang Family, and kept from both Heihachi and Kazuya Mishima, despite multiple kidnappings.

Ogre was eventually awakened when a Tekken Force squadron excavated the temple it was slumbering in. It wiped out the squad and then began seeking out powerful martial artists so that it could fight them and absorb their abilities, killing or badly wounding them in the process.[3] Among its victims were King[4] and Baek Doo San.[5] Ogre also attacked Jun Kazama and her son, Jin Kazama, at their home. Jin was knocked unconscious in the attack, and his mother was nowhere to be found when he stirred.[6]

Heihachi Mishima, the head of the Mishima Zaibatsu business conglomerate, had ordered the excavation of the temple and believed that he would be able to attain great power by capturing Ogre and using its genetic material to enhance his own strength. He began training his grandson, Jin Kazama, who was determined to take revenge on Ogre for the apparent murder of his mother. When Jin’s training was complete, Heihachi announced the King of Iron Fist Tournament 3, believing that a gathering of strong fighters would draw Ogre out so that it could be subdued.[3]

Ogre appeared at the tournament’s final and was pitted against Paul Phoenix. Paul was able to overpower Ogre, but, believing the match to be over, he left before Ogre morphed into its true form.[7] Jin then stepped in and killed True Ogre.[8]

Heihachi was able to have his scientists collect various genetic samples from Ogre - however, he failed to augment himself with any of its power due to genetic incompatibility.[9]

Personality

Ogre is a highly intelligent being, who tracks down prey of a particularly high quality of martial expertise. It gains power from doing this, and is described as a being that "understands entire structures of all living and artificial beings, and absorbs them".[2] In its first form, Ogre is capable of speech (as seen in its winning animations). It speaks in an unknown, ancient language. In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, it's Continue? screen as True Ogre on the Naraku stage, depicts much more animalistic behaviour. It roars and then turns with its back to the viewer, seemingly devouring the player character as the sounds of tearing flesh are heard.[10]

Appearance

Ogre's first (or ancient) form resembles a tall, muscular male humman, with dark green skin. It has long auburn hair and glowing orange eyes. It is adorned with various pieces of old Aztec jewelry and a large golden headpiece. It carries a buckler shield strapped to its arm, that is said to be the fabled Stone of The Sun, the Aztec Calendar.

Ogre's second form stands not much taller than its first but is hunched over to an extent due to the extreme metamorphosis. In this incarnation, it no longer resembles a human, sporting a large, grotesque frame, dark brown and gray fur, a monstrous face, wings, horns, and a large Viper snake (or several snakes in Tekken Tag Tournament 2) in place of a right arm. All of the jewelry worn by Ogre in its previous form has disappeared, save for two leglets and one armlet. In order to achieve this form, it absorbs the life and/or fighting force of Heihachi (or Jin if the player is playing as Heihachi) in Tekken 3. Afterword, the arena surrounding it will dim to an eerie pitch black or extreme darkness (in the Arcade version of Tekken Tag Tournament).

Ogre's non-canonical third form (from Tekken 5's Devil Within mode) is less of a drastic change from its first to second, but is much larger overall, appearing to be several stories high. In this form, it has a golden and aqua color, and more closely resembles a large dragon or dinosaur. It features many more horns protruding from its limbs and an elongated head and also has four large spikes jutting from the sides of its mouth.

Story

Tekken 3

Official Strategy Guide
The God of Fighting.... The legend of Native Americans says the Ogre is the war weapon which creatures from outer space left on Earth in ancient times. It understands entire structures of all living and artificial beings, and absorbs them.

It wanders the earth in search of strong souls."[2]

Ending Description, "Awakening"
Ogre stands on top of the burning temple and morphs into True Ogre. Two helicopters fly towards the temple but True Ogre destroys both of them with a single fire breath.

Summary of In-Game Events Ogre is first mentioned in Heihachi Mishima's character profile. It states that many years after Heihachi had reclaimed control of the Mishima Zaibatsu, he forms the Tekken Force, his own military group. One of the missions of the Tekken Force is to covertly search the world for Ogre. Tekken Force searches an ancient temple located somewhere in Mexico. Soon after arriving there, Heihachi learns that his entire force has been obliterated by Ogre. Heihachi, having witnessed the power of Ogre, seeks to capture him in hopes of creating the ultimate life form.

According to official canon, Ogre attacks many world-renowned martial arts masters around the world and absorbs their ki and abilities into his own being. Ogre eventually makes his way towards Yakushima, where Jun Kazama lives with her fifteen-year-old son, Jin. Ogre finds them and attacks. In the ensuing fight, Ogre outmatches Jin. The exact result of the battle is unknown, but Jin is knocked out cold and awakens, later on, to find his home destroyed and Ogre and Jun nowhere to be found. Assuming Ogre has taken Jun's life, Jin swears revenge on him.

Tekken_3_-_Ogre_True_Ogre_ending

Tekken 3 - Ogre True Ogre ending

As bait to lure Ogre into the open, Heihachi announces the King of Iron Fist Tournament 3 five years later. Ogre shows up and is defeated by Paul Phoenix. However, unknown to Paul, Ogre morphs into his true form and the tournament continues. Ogre eventually confronts Jin and they clash in battle. Jin emerges victorious and Ogre is defeated and killed.

Tekken 4

Though Ogre is not playable, it appears in flashbacks and plays a role in the story. Heihachi's scientists capture samples of its blood and tissue in order to splice its DNA with Heihachi's and make Heihachi immortal. The experiment fails however, since Heihachi lacks the necessary Devil Gene in his blood. Heihachi announces the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4 in order to lure Kazuya and Jin, who both carry the Devil Gene, into the open.

Tekken 5

Ogre appears only in the mini-game, Devil Within, as a boss.

The plot details events that occur during the two month period between Tekken 4 and Tekken 5. After Jin Kazama leaves the Hon-Maru after the final battle in the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, he hears rumors that his mother, Jun Kazama, is still alive at G Corporation. When Jin travels to their labs, he finds no trace of his mother but, instead, discovers that G Corporation has either resurrected Ogre or cloned it. In the ruins of an ancient temple beneath the labs, Jin battles Ogre once again. Ogre flees to a deeper part of the ruins with Jin in hot pursuit.

In the deeper ruins, Jin encounters a giant contraption that uses a large white orb to attack. After Jin destroys this, it is revealed that he has unwittingly broken the seal containing Ogre. Jin battles True Ogre once again. Once Ogre is defeated, it reveals a new transformation. Despite its new advantages, Jin still triumphs and destroys Ogre possibly once and for all. It is still debated whether the events in Devil Within are canon or not but it is generally assumed not.

Tekken 8

Though Ogre is not playable, it makes appearances via Jin's flashbacks.

Memories of Ogre attacking Jun cause Jin to lose control of his body to his Devil Gene and transform. Later, as Jin heads to Yakushima, Lili shows her research into the Kazama family tree. Jin reveals then that Ogre was responsible for the attack on Yakushima and presumably killed his mother, Jun, seven years ago.

Special Alliance Partners:

Tekken (Mobile)

In both the IOS and the Android version of the game, Ogre appears at the end of the game, where it is summoned by the antagonist and newcomer, Revenant, after Kazuya, Nina, and the third player of their choosing defeat him. Ogre wants the player team to join their side, but they refuse the offer. Ogre and Revenant disappear in a shadowed light, after the latter warns them that they are no match for the both of them.

Tekken: Bloodline

Like in Tekken 3, Ogre's role in Tekken: Bloodline is the principle unseen antagonist. Ogre features in the first and final episodes. In the first, Ogre attacks the Kazama household, causing Jun's disappearance and devastating a young Jin who is also knocked unconscious in the fight. Ogre is mentioned throughout the series as Jin's main motivation for seeking revenge. Heihachi also receives a report on Ogre, detailing that Ogre has likely attacked Wang Jinrei, Baek Doo San, King, and Lee Chaolan too. In the final episode, after Jin defeats Heihachi, Ogre descends from the sky and engages him. Ogre is defeated by Jin, but transforms into True Ogre, before being defeated by Jin again, this time with the help of Paul Phoenix, Ling Xiaoyu, and Hwoarang.

Gameplay

In Tekken 3, Ogre's fighting style is a combination of moves from various other Tekken characters, many if whom it has seemingly absorbed, and are thus present in the game. These include the styles of Armor King, Wang Jinrei, Bruce Irvin, Jun Kazama, Lee Chaolan, Anna Williams (who was not present in the Arcade version of Tekken 3), Kunimitsu, and Baek Doo San. Ogre also has two unique moves: "Serpent's Venom", and "Ancient Power". The last one defends against a wide range of attacks: it stops elbows, knees, throws, running attacks, and jumping attacks, and since it is not an actual reversal, it cannot be chickened.

In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Ancient Ogre has many additional moves, some taken from other characters (most notably Craig Marduk, Paul Phoenix, Steve Fox, Bryan Fury, Julia Chang, Devil Jin, and Jinpachi Mishima), and some unique to itself. Ogre is still a very basic character and lacks combo strings or stances, but is a great punisher because of its raw power and long reach.

Fighting Style

Listed as "unknown", Ogre's fighting style is a combination of several moves that prior characters in the series utilize, suggesting that Ogre gains knowledge by absorbing or copying the fighting prowess of those it defeats.

In all of its forms, Ogre seems to exhibit a type of telekinesis. In nearly all of his throws in Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament, Ogre swings around his foe without physically grabbing them, though this is likely due to the throws originating from the larger Kuma. Although this difference in size would not be seen with True Ogre, this became obvious in Ogre's case. This was later explained in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, when Ogre was first revealed to be able to use telekinesis offensively.

Ogre also possesses the ability to fly, even without the wings of its second form. It never uses this ability during a fight except in Street Fighter X Tekken, however. In Street Fighter X Tekken, Ogre is also capable of Pyrokinesis, and can imbue its attacks with fire.

Character Relationships

  • Jin Kazama - Ogre attacked Jin and his mother, destroying their home on Yakushima. These events are the catalyst for Jin seeking out revenge and Heihachi's tutilege.
  • Jun Kazama - Ogre attacked Jun, and seemingly killed her. Ogre retains some of Jun's moves because of this. It is later revealed that the two fought and Jun instead only went missing.
  • Heihachi Mishima - Heihachi sought to steal a pendant that could control Ogre. He is responsible for awakening Ogre by sending his Tekken Force out to excavate Ogre's temple. He also trained Jin in order to use him as bait to lure Ogre out. He then harvested Ogre's DNA and used it to try and increase his longevity, eventually realising he needed to kidnap a Devil Gene user in order to splice their DNA with Ogre's.
  • Devil Jin/Devil Kazuya - In Tekken 4, Heihachi needs both the genes of Devil and Ogre to create the ultimate life form, indicating a connection between the two. In Devil Within, the presence of Ogre is enough to trigger Jin's "Devil Gene". In Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign, if using Julia, the temple of Azazel, the progenitor of the Devil Gene, reminds her of Ogre, and when Azazel appears, she initially thinks it's another form of Ogre.
  • Michelle Chang & Julia Chang - The mother and daughter are aware of Native American legends surrounding Ogre, and are protecting a pendant that can control Ogre. They and their family are at odds with the Mishima Zaibatsu who seek to steal this pendant from them.
  • Paul Phoenix - Paul defeated Ogre in the third Kin g of Iron Fist Tournament, but walked away before Ogre transformed into True Ogre.
  • King I - King was killed by Ogre prior to the events of Tekken 3. Ogre retains some of King's moves because of this.
  • King II - King II's motivation for becoming a fighter is to avenge his mentor, King II, after Ogre killed him.
  • Baek Doo San - Baek was severely injured by Ogre prior to the events of Tekken 3, and presumed dead. Ogre retains some of Baek's moves because of this. Baek recovered from his injuries later however.
  • Hwoarang - The presumed death of his master, Baek, is one of Hwoarang's motivations for entering the third King of Iron Fist Tournament.
  • Unknown - (non-canon) Unknown fight's Ogre in Ogre's Tekken Tag Tournament ending, apparently in order to protect Jin from Ogre.
  • Akuma - (non-canon) Akuma is Ogre's rival in Street Fighter X Tekken.

Possible Relationships

Ogre has several moves of other characters from Tekken 2, many of whom were cut from the initial release of Tekken 3. Ogre may have attacked and absorbed the moves of the following characters:

It is, however, left unclear as to how Ogre would've "stolen" moves from Kazuya and Kuma, who were canonically dead when he emerged. A possible explanation was that Ogre had taken his Mishima Style Fighting Karate attacks from Tekken Force members that he had killed, while Kuma's attacks were more of Ogre's more primal instincts, which are more visible with True Ogre.

Trivia

  • If the player defeats Ogre using Heihachi, Ogre will absorb Jin's power to become True Ogre instead of Heihachi's.
  • The unknown language spoken by Ogre in his win poses in Tekken 3 are actually Japanese lines reversed.[12] Ogre one of the first characters to speak in the series.
  • Kotal Kahn, one of the new fighters from Mortal Kombat X, bears a particularly striking resemblance to Ancient Ogre.
  • In Tekken (Mobile), Ogre has a cameo appearance, though its green skin is changed to gray and silver, and its hair is now black.
  • There are many statues resembling Ogre's head on the doors of its lair in Tekken 5's Devil Within (Mode).

Tekken 3:

Tekken Tag Tournament 2:

  • Ogre's item move allows it to suck its opponent's energy, causing them to appear incredibly thin for a brief period of time. This also has the added effect of recovering some health for Ogre.
  • Ogre has a special win pose with Heihachi Mishima where Ogre will attempt to grab Heihachi as it does in Tekken 3's arcade mode. Heihachi is able to stop Ogre's hand, then smirks.
  • Ogre has a special win pose with Unknown, where the pair mimic Ogre's Tekken Tag Tournament ending.
  • Ogre has a special tag throw with True Ogre where Ogre telekinetically lifts the opponent to allow True Ogre to perform Marfic. Before the opponent can land, Ogre rams them with Shoulder Tackle.
