Jinpachi Mishima (三島 仁八 Mishima Jinpachi?) is a character in the Tekken series and the main antagonist of Tekken 5. He is the father of Heihachi Mishima and the founder and former head of the Mishima Zaibatsu.

Jinpachi is also notable for being the very first unplayable boss in the main series. He later returned as an unplayable boss in Tekken Revolution, although he was made fully playable in the PlayStation 3 version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and later Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

Biography

Jinpachi is the father of Heihachi Mishima and the founder of the Mishima Zaibatsu. He expanded the corporation into an industrial empire by capitalising on military demand during World War 2. After the war, he regretted the company's direction, and it is stated that he abhorred needless conflict. He instead resolved to devote his family's legacy solely to martial arts.[2] Unlike most of the Mishimas, Jinpachi is an honorable fighter with a strong sense of wisdom. He is also friends with Wang Jinrei. However, Jinpachi's life took a turn for the worse when the bitter Heihachi staged a coup and stole the company from him. Jinpachi attempted to retake the company from Heihachi, but failed and was imprisoned by him beneath the Mishima family temple, Hon-Maru. Sometime later, he died of starvation, until he was later animated by a demonic entity.

When Hon-Maru was destroyed by an army of Jack robots, Jinpachi was freed. Heihachi had been caught in the explosion and was believed to be dead at the time. Jinpachi organized the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament, determined to put an end to the corrupt Mishima bloodline, and to free himself from the demon possessing him. At the end of the tournament, Jinpachi was defeated and ultimately killed by his great-grandson, Jin Kazama. With the evil force that had awakened him vanquished, a grateful Jinpachi passed away peacefully.

Personality

Unlike most Mishimas, Jinpachi was a man of honor, harmony and wisdom, a friend of Wang Jinrei, and one of few to show compassion to his grandson Kazuya when the latter was a child. In his Tekken 5 ending, realizing that no one could stop him, he shed tears as the "devil" that possessed him grew more powerful, showing remorse for the actions he performed while under its control as well as great sadness over the feud that cursed his family.

Appearance

Large and muscular, Jinpachi is an intimidating figure, despite his age. He has hazel brown eyes and a bald scalp, while white hair hangs around the back of his head. He also has a short white beard and a mustache, which curves around the sides his face to form two points to the sides of his head, similar to the hairstyle of his son Heihachi.

When Jinpachi is under the possession of the spirit, his eyes glow yellow and a large fanged mouth opens in his abdomen. His skin also changes color, and a misty aura surrounds his body.

Outfits

Main article: Jinpachi Mishima/Outfits

Jinpachi mainly wears clothes and tattered pants on his lower body, with a large metal sash decorated with white ribbons fastened around his waist. He fights barefoot and topless, although he does wear jewelry, mainly gold bands around his wrists, upper arms and ankles, as well as an ornate gold necklace.

Story

Tekken and Tekken 2

Jinpachi does not appear but he is mentioned in Wang's backstory in both games. In addition to this, Jinpachi's grave can be seen in Wang's ending in the second game. In Wang's backstory, it is stated that Jinpachi had already been long dead before the first game, but it is implied that before he died, Jinpachi knew that the Mishima line would be doomed someday, and warned Wang about this. Despite his warnings, in the first game, it is stated that Wang only had suspicions about Heihachi's true conduct, but in the second game, he is already seeking a successor to bring back honor to the Mishima Zaibatsu. (Who turned out to be Lee Chaolan.)

Tekken 5

Having been taken over by a vengeful spirit and granted incredible supernatural powers, Jinpachi breaks out of Hon-Maru when the compound is destroyed during a battle between Heihachi, Kazuya and an army of Jack-4's sent to kill Kazuya. With the news of Heihachi's apparent demise, Jinpachi takes over the Mishima Zaibatsu from behind the scenes and organizes the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament in the hopes that someone will free him before the spirit takes him over completely, to the point that he writes to his old friend Wang, asking him to compete and put an end to the Mishima bloodline, which has been cursed by Heihachi's greedy ambitions.

At the tournament's finale, Jinpachi is confronted by his great-grandson, Jin Kazama, who defeats him and puts him to rest at last.

Tekken 5 Jinpachi Mishima Ending

Ending Description
Jinpachi laments that nobody was able to defeat him and, as a single bloody tear runs down his cheek, transforms into a much more demonic form as the spirit takes him over completely. He then yells, in what is either rage or pain, and shoots up into the sky. As the screen fades to black, a message reads "Jinpachi's mind is consumed by the devil as he reaches his final transformation. The world will never be the same". This ending is only shown when the player loses to Jinpachi and decides not to continue.

After Jinpachi is defeated, he turns into dust, but in some later games like TTT2, he was resurrected.

Tekken 6

Jinpachi is briefly mentioned by both Devil Jin and Jin in Wang's stage during the Scenario Campaign; the former taunting Wang over the death of his best friend.

Tekken 7

Heihachi's takeover of the Zaibatsu from Jinpachi is briefly mentioned to have occurred around the same time he killed Kazumi and threw Kazuya down the cliff.

Other Appearances

Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Jinpachi appeared in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, now as a playable character.

Profile:
Heihachi Mishima's father--and the one who was once known as the "Ultimate Fighter." A longtime friend of Wang Jinrei, the two have something of a friendly rivalry. He has a soft spot for his grandson, Kazuya, and even trained him when he was just a boy.

"Let's see what you've got."[3]

The console version's opening movie has Jinpachi taking a taxi to "where he can display his amazing power", believing he is going to where Heihachi's new tournament is. An unlockable "epilogue" movie shows that the driver misinterpreted Jinpachi's instructions and, thinking him a dirty old man, took him to a red light district instead. Jinpachi wonders if said district is where the tournament is being held as various women proposition him.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Jinpachi Mishima Arcade Ending

Ending Description
Jinpachi is seen roaming inside Heihachi's estate. Upon finding Heihachi, he confronts him, clearly desiring revenge for his betrayal. Heihachi merely remarks on how Jinpachi has just returned from hell. Jinpachi then unleashes his innate power at Heihachi, who at first seems to withstand it easily. Further enraged, Jinpachi focusing his powers, and unleashes a blast that destroys the entire room around them and knocks Heihachi away.

Tekken Revolution

Jinpachi appears in Tekken Revolution as a possible sub-boss in Arcade Mode, with his son, Heihachi, being the alternative.

Gameplay

In Tekken 5 and the PSP version Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Jinpachi was an unplayable boss character with overpowered attacks but a limited moveset. In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, he was made a more balanced character and given an expanded moveset.

In terms of sheer damage potential, Jinpachi has no equals. His attacks are powerful, long-ranged and easy to perform, and his punches are very powerful. While he suffers from poor mobility, he can use his Astral Projection to scoot forward or backwards rapidly. This makes him a constant threat to his opponent, regardless of where he may be. Also, Jinpachi's flight ability is useful for applying pressure at long range, where an opponent doesn't expect an attack, but, inversely, it is much less useful at close range because a jab is more than enough to punish him.

Fighting Style

Although it is officially stated as unknown,[1] Jinpachi fights using moves of the Mishima Style Fighting Karate style. In Tekken 5, it is mixed with demonic powers.

Moves

Character Relationships

  • Heihachi Mishima - His now-deceased son and enemy. It's unknown how they first became enemies, but he was betrayed by Heihachi 40 years before Tekken 5, leading to Heihachi seizing control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Heihachi later imprisoned Jinpachi under Hon-Maru.
  • Kazumi Mishima - His deceased daughter-in-law, she was also a student at his dojo before Heihachi's takeover.
  • Kazuya Mishima - His grandson. Unlike Heihachi, Jinpachi was deeply fond of Kazuya and cared for him, being a father figure for his grandson and teaching him the Mishima style karate. Jinpachi is also the only person that Kazuya addresses politely (ending his statements with "desu" or "masu").
  • Lee Chaolan - His adoptive grandson. It unlikely that Jinpachi knew Lee.
  • Lars Alexandersson - His grandson. They never met and seem unaware of each other's existence.
  • Jin Kazama - His great-grandson. Was defeated by him at the end of Tekken 5.
  • Wang Jinrei - His best friend. He wrote him a letter during Tekken 5 to seek his help.
  • Mokujin - It was awakened by Jinpachi's evil power in Tekken 5.
  • Legendary Capoeira Master - They may have fought each other at some point in the past (non-canon).[4]

Quotes

Trivia

General:

  • Jinpachi's name translates to (仁 jin) "benevolence"; (八 pachi) "eight". The surname of all members of the Mishima family 三島 (Mishima) meaning "third island".
  • It is possible that Jin Kazama is named after him. Naming a child with a kanji from a relative is a common practice in Japan, and already established as a tradition within the Mishima Clan.
  • Jinpachi is named after Tekken developer, Katsuhiro Harada's father.[5]
  • It is possible that Jinpachi was originally intended to debut in Tekken 4, as his name can be heard in hidden clips said by the announcer in Tekken 4.[6]
  • Jinpachi was not playable in the PS2 version of Tekken 5, but his ending was still unlockable by losing to him in Story Mode and then letting the "Continue?" timer run out.
  • Most of Jinpachi's backstory in Tekken 5 was actually revealed by defeating Jinpachi with Lei Wulong in his story mode, and not with any of the Mishimas, or even Wang. Some more of his story was also learned in Raven's story mode.
  • Despite first appearing in Tekken 5, Jinpachi did not become a playable character until the PlayStation 3 port of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection.
    • He can be unlocked once clearing the Void stage in Tekken Dojo Mode.
  • In Tekken 5, in Heihachi's story mode, Heihachi implies that Jinpachi has "Devil's blood", while Devil Jin's interludes have them talking about Devil. In Jinpachi's ending also it's written that "Jinpachi's mind is consumed by the Devil".
  • According to Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada, contrary to popular belief, Jinpachi doesn't possess the Devil Gene.
    • Harada also revealed that it was not actually Jinpachi who built up the Mishima Zaibatsu financially. It was, in fact, Heihachi and therefore this is the reason why Jinpachi was riding in a taxi to get to the King of Iron Fist Tournament. Jinpachi never had the financial resources in the first place.[7]
      • In the Tekken 7 story, it is actually stated that Jinpachi actually had control of the Mishima Clan's budding military industry for a time, but decided to fully devote his family's legacy to martial arts instead, as he abhorred needless conflict.
  • Tekken 7's story mode actually retcons some of the established lore regarding Jinpachi, mainly that it was actually Heihachi who founded the Mishima Zaibatsu; Heihachi took over the Mishima Clan's resources and heavy industry, and then proceeded to rename the "organization" Mishima Zaibatsu; so a hostile takeover of a company still technically occurred nevertheless, while Jinpachi's profile in Tekken 5 has the note about him being "the founder of the Mishima Zaibatsu" and that he lost control in a coup over 50 years before.[8]
  • Jinpachi is one of the three Mishimas, the others being Lars Alexandersson and Kazumi Mishima, who are unable to use the Crouch Dash motion (f,n,d,d/f). However, he has the Thunder God Fist (1+2+3+4,1 in DR, d+3+4,1 in TTT2) and the Electric Wind God Fist (1+2+3+4,2 in DR, d+3+4,2 in TTT2) abilities. Jinpachi also has the option of the regular Wind God Fist (d/f+2 in TTT2, WS+2 in Tekken 5).
  • Jinpachi's appearance, as with Broly from Dragon Ball Z, is inspired by warlike figures of Buddhism such as Vajrapani.
  • The PS2 and PS3 models of Jinpachi are the same as the cutscene versions of himself. However, his alternate model which was introduced in the PSP port is many times more demonic than his other forms, as his skin changes from orange to black, his hair is replaced by fire, and magma comes out of his eyes.
  • Jinpachi cannot be customized in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (presumably because of his in-game character model), this was changed in Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
  • He was voiced by the late Chikao Ōtsuka and Takeshi Aono. Like the character himself, both voice actors are now deceased.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2:

  • Jinpachi's in-game voice is still the same from before, although some of his animations have been revamped, such as the projectile's no longer emerging from his stomach, now utilized with an original Hadouken-like animation.
  • Jinpachi has a special continue screen with Heihachi where Jinpachi will spank Heihachi repeatedly, reminiscent of what Heihachi does to Lee Chaolan.
  • On the boss battle of Fight Lab Stage 5, Jinpachi will be customized to resemble Akuma from the Street Fighter series. He will be fought against after defeating Ganryu and Bob (with the former designed to resemble Ryu and the latter designed to resemble Ken Masters).
    • This version of Jinpachi is unique in the fact that he is completely shaven, which is normally unobtainable.
  • Jinpachi's partners in Ghost Battle (from the lowest to the highest ranks) are Panda, Doctor Bosconovitch, Kazuya, Heihachi and Wang.
  • Jinpachi appears alongside Sebastian and Doctor Bosconovitch in Wang's ending.
  • In Wang's ending, Jinpachi's voice is still distorted instead of his normal voice from his human form.
  • Jinpachi's item move has him summon the stone that sealed him under Honmaru before burying the opponent with it.

Other:

  • In Street Fighter X Tekken, Dhalsim's Swap Costume is based on Jinpachi's appearance.
  • Jinpachi is one of the characters named by Tekken 4's announcer as unused audio.[9]
  • Jinpachi is mentioned in the animated series, Tekken: Bloodline. Heihachi states that Jinpachi set up two exquisitely carved, stone lanterns on the Mishima Estate and broke one with his bare hands, to demonstrate the Mishima power to create and destroy.
