Please note: This name is Chinese; "Lei" is a family name, not a given name; the given name of this character is "Wulong".

Lei Wulong (Chinese: 雷武龍 Léi Wǔlóng; Japanese: レイ・ウーロン Rei Ūron; It may be written with given name first as Wulong Lei) is a character in the Tekken series who was introduced in Tekken 2 and has returned for all subsequent games with the exception of Tekken 8. Lei is a skilled police officer from China, though he has lived and worked in Hong Kong for all of his known professional career. He is known for his lighthearted personality and laid back attitude. While being one of the more comical characters in the series, he has dogged tenacity when it comes to his work and extraordinary skill as a martial artist.

Biography

Lei Wulong was the Hong Kong International Police Force’s number one detective. Prior to the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2, Lei’s partner was killed when a fight involving himself and a contract killer targeting Bruce Irvin broke out on a plane, causing it to crash. Lei picked up where his partner left off on their investigation into the International Mafia’s money laundering activities and discovered that the organization had connections to Kazuya Mishima of the Mishima Zaibatsu, even deploying an accountant to deliver documents to Kazuya on the doomed plane Lei's partner was killed on.

Lei entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2 to confront Kazuya about the Zaibatsu’s Mafia connections.[1] During the tournament, he defeated Bruce, who had been taken in by the Mishima Zaibatsu. After the tournament, Bruce was involved in another plane crash reported to have killed all onboard; however, Lei suspected that the Mishima Zaibatsu had staged the supposed accident, and that Bruce had survived. He did not investigate the matter further, instead returning to his usual work.[2]

Lei was placed on an investigation into the Hong Kong drug trade, during which time he discovered that an International Police Organization officer, Bryan Fury, had connections with drug dealers.[3]

More than a decade and a half after the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2, Lei was investigating the mysterious disappearances of martial artists across the world. During his investigations, Lei was visited by Heihachi Mishima, who had regained control of the Mishima Zaibatsu at the close of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2. Heihachi asked Lei to participate in the King of Iron Fist Tournament 3. Lei was unsure why Heihachi had sought him out, but attended the tournament nonetheless.[2]

Following the tournament, Lei returned to work once more. His girlfriend dumped him, unable to bear his workaholic lifestyle, and entered a relationship with his assistant instead. Lei became depressed by the circumstances, and botched a two-years-in-the-making operation to bring a crime syndicate to justice around the same time. Lei’s rivals in the force secretly told his superiors that his failure was the result of him allowing personal matters to affect his work. Lei was suspended for a month.

During his suspension, Lei learned from an informant that the crime syndicate were planning to hire an assassin to kill Steve Fox, a boxer, at the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4. Lei entered in the hopes of thwarting the operation and regaining his honor.[4] He arrested several members of the crime syndicate at the close of the tournament,[5] and was also able to help Steve find documents linking his origin to Mishima Zaibatsu experiments.[6]

Lei recommenced his work, and began investigating an individual responsible for destroying dojos across China. After hearing of similar crimes being committed in Japan, Lei traveled to the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5, suspecting that the culprit, Feng Wei, would make an appearance there.[5]

Despite his efforts, Lei was unable to apprehend Feng. Before he could continue his search, he was called to suppress disturbances across the world. Soon, the world entered all-out war, instigated by the Mishima Zaibatsu under Jin Kazama’s rule. Lei infiltrated the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 to apprehend Jin.[7] Lei also conducted an investigation into the Mishima Zaibatsu's rivals, G Corporation, around this time, and was subsequently targeted by G Corp forces. Lars Alexandersson and Alisa Bosconovitch were able to prevent G Corporation forces from harming or capturing Lei.[8] Lei shared information regarding Kazuya Mishima’s brutal ascension through the ranks of G Corporation with the pair.[9]

Lei ultimately failed to arrest Jin Kazama. His confidence was badly affected, and he took an extended leave of absence, disappearing from the public eye. Over the course of his break, Lei became a big fan of the idol Lucky Chloe.

As the war between the Mishima Zaibatsu and G Corporation intensified, Lei became aware of information being circulated claiming that Kazuya was a devil. To discover the truth, Lei resolved to take action and contact Kazuya. He also learned that Lucky Chloe was performing marketing duties as the public face of G Corporation. He secretly hoped he would be able to meet her if all went well.[10]

Personality

A man who lives for his job. Dedicated to the point of obsession, Lei is a law-abiding and gifted cop. Lei is a workaholic, who becomes fixated on his cases and on tenaciously seeing them through to the end at all costs. In the past, this has earned him a reputation as a 'supercop' and the best detective in the agency, but it has also destroyed some of his relationships, most noticably with his girlfriend. Despite this, Lei's solution has always been to throw himself back into his work. Whilst Lei usually works large cases related to international crime syndicates, he is also a stickler for the rules and goes out of his way to prevent minor crimes from happening in his vicinity, with some of his endings depicting him stopping street thieves or handing out parking tickets.

Lei is fair-minded and affable to those around him (unless they break the law), and has a good sense of humour. In his Tekken 5 interludes, he is shown treating his acquaintances (such as Wang Jinrei and Steve Fox) with respect. For his enemies however, he mantains a stern and direct approach to their arrest. Although his attempts can sometimes be clumsy, Lei's intentions are always virtuous in nature.

Official Website Profile (Japanese)
SUPERCOP. He drove Bruce to the brink of total defeat at the previous tournament, but unfortunately he managed to escape. After the tournament, Bruce's homeward bound plane crashed against the ground. There once was a rumor that Kazuya's corp made it happen in order to silence him, but Lei thinks it might be a disguised accident and doubts if Bruce is dead.

For 19 years since then, Lei has solved a lot of international crimes. He is such an agile person that doesn't look 45 years old, therefore he is liked by everybody called by the name of "Super Police", and the criminal organizations all over the world were afraid of that name most.

In the meantime, the cases that the prominent martial artists are missing frequently happen within the jurisdiction of his station. Lei, who was investigating the cases, was visited by Heihachi Mishima, the head of the Mishima financial group, who asked Lei to participate in "The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3". Lei couldn't understand the reasons why Heihachi asked him to participate, but he made up his mind to participate hearing him saying, "You'll see if you participate."[15][16]

Falling within his jurisdiction are the strange disappearances of prominent martial artists. During these investigations, Lei was visited by the head man of the MFE, Heihachi Mishima. Special Alliance Partners:

Tekken: Bloodline

Lei Wulong makes a brief appearance as one of the fighters in the third King of Iron Fist Tournament. He is defeated off-screen during the preliminary matches by Feng Wei.

Gameplay

Lei is a high risk/high reward character that has to make very good and creative use of his stances in order to throw off and confuse his opponents. Lei is one of the more difficult characters to use because he requires a good understanding of the game mechanics in order to know what situations are in his benefit. Players usually have to know a good deal of their opponent before Lei can be deadly.

Lei requires players to be patient and smart, since he is a very unsafe character, but if Lei can get a good momentum going, his damage output is very high and he gets rewarded heavily either through mix-ups or stance setups that are riddled with throws, cancels, and tricky mids and lows.

Fighting style

Lei's fighting style is based on the Five Animals form of Chinese martial arts and on Drunken Boxing.

Trivia

General:

  • Lei Wulong's name in Chinese is written 雷武龍/雷武龙; in which 雷 (Léi) is the surname and 武龍/武龙 (Wǔlóng) is his given name. Lei Wulong's name is in Mandarin Chinese despite him being from Hong Kong. In Cantonese, his name would be read as 'Lui Molung'. The meanings of the Chinese characters that make up his name are, "Thunder" (Léi), "Martial", and "Dragon" respectively.
  • As with Marshall Law being Namco's tribute to legendary martial artist Bruce Lee, Lei is a tribute to the famous martial artist and cultural icon, Jackie Chan. Even Lei's nickname, 'Super Cop', is a nod to Chan as it is the subtitle of Police Story 3: Super Cop starring Chan in the leading role. The following similarities between Lei and Chan also exist:
    • Lei can be Customized to resemble a few characters portrayed by Jackie Chan (ex. Kevin Chan, or Wong Fei Hung).
    • Lei's Double Foot Stomp throw is very similar to that of Jackie Chan's throw in the Jackie Chan Stuntmaster game.
    • Coincidentally, his voice actor since Tekken 3 up to Tekken 7, Hiroya Ishimaru, was also the official Japanese dub-over voice artist for Jackie Chan[26].
  • Lei once appeared in a SONY commercial.[citation needed]
  • Lei is one of the three characters that work for a government rather than a private company. The other two are Sergei Dragunov and the original Jack.
  • Lei is the second fighter who can recover his health during a match. The first is Yoshimitsu.
  • It is sometimes shown that Lei's age is catching up with him. Often after he lands a move, he starts to have back problems (much like Wang does, especially in his TTT ending). This also happens In Street Fighter X Tekken after performing his Super Art.
    • Also, noticeably, in Tekken 7, Lei is the only one of the now middle-aged fighters from before Tekken 3 whose hair has started to show visible signs of graying.
  • Hon-Fu from SNK's Fatal Fury 3 has a similar story to Lei. He is a Hong Kong detective constantly chasing criminals and with elements of Jackie Chan present in his fighting style. Hon-Fu, however, also uses elements from Bruce Lee. Lei can also be customized to resemble Hon-Fu in Tekken 6.
  • Lei also shares several similarities to Brad Wong from Tecmo's Dead or Alive 3.
  • In the PS Vita episodic trailers for Street Fighter X Tekken, Lei refers to Chun-Li as "an old friend", but in his win quote against her in the game, Lei behaves as if meeting Chun-Li for the first time.

Tekken 2:

  • Lei's stage is Hong Kong Rooftop.
  • Lei's Stage 8 sub-boss is Bruce Irvin.
  • Lei's arcade soundtrack features the Game Announcer saying his name, however the sound clip was removed in the arranged version.
  • In his in-game appearance on his Player 2 outfit, his handgun is shown to hang loose at the center of his waist during the fight.
  • A Ridge Racer poster is visible in the background during his ending. Also, his ammunition case is labelled 'Namco'.

Tekken 3:

Tekken Tag Tournament:

  • Lei's Stage 7 sub-boss is Bruce Irvin. If Bruce is not available, then it is Bryan Fury.
  • Lei is one of the few characters who can not wear every one of his selectable outfits in his ending. Instead, he will wear either the green or purple version of his Player One outfit.

Tekken 4:

  • Lei becomes playable after completing Story Mode four times.
  • Lei's ending is connected to Steve Fox and Nina Williams's endings.
  • This is the only game where Lei wears a leather jacket and jeans in his P2 outfit.
  • Prior to the game's launch date, Lei originally going to speak Japanese rather than English, but this was ultimately cut and left unused in the arcade version's game directory.[27]

Tekken 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection:

  • Lei's sub-bosses are Wang Jinrei and Feng Wei.
  • In Feng Wei's interlude with Lei, Lei's voice actor mistakenly says "Lee Wulong" instead of "Lei Wulong".
  • While Lei is meant to have a Cantonese or Hong Kong accent, his Japanese VA doesn't always make the accent convincing, particularly in the way he says "Come on" with a clearly Japanese accent. During cutscenes, Lei mostly speaks American English.
  • Lei is one of the few characters to regain their original Tekken 3 color scheme in Dark Resurrection.
  • After Lei defeats Jinpachi Mishima in Story Mode, the clip showing Jinpachi's death will play, after which another interlude will play showing Lei picking up the stolen scroll before turning to leave.
    • Lei is one of the three characters to show Jinpachi's death clip and one last interlude after, with the others being Ling Xiaoyu and Julia Chang.

Tekken 6:

  • In a Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion trailer, Lei is shown fighting Marshall Law.
  • Lei's Stage 1 and Stage 2 opponents in the Scenario Campaign's "Arena" mode are Feng Wei and Kazuya Mishima.
  • Unlike the majority of the Tekken 6 characters, Lei is not a boss in the Scenario Campaign mode. Instead, he allies with Lars Alexandersson (or another character of the player's choosing) and Alisa Bosconovitch to fight off the G Corporation forces.
  • His first item move involves him shooting with a pistol, while his second replaces his Tripping with a special K.O. animation, where he will knock the opponent to the ground before handcuffing them.
  • Lei's voice has been changed yet again, he speaks with an American accent during gameplay, cutscenes, and his ending movie.
    • As of this game onwards, Lei begins to speak with fluent American English during in-game battle dialogues as well.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2:

  • Lei appears in both Ganryu and Hwoarang's endings in his Player 2 outfit. He also wears his primary outfit in his ending during the restaurant fight with Marshall Law.
  • Lei's Item Move has him strike his opponent repeatedly with a wooden stool.

Tekken 7:

  • The background theme for his character trailer is from the Festival stage from Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection.
  • Lei was first revealed at EVO 2018 alongside Anna and Negan.
  • Lei has different Rage Drives depends on which stance he is in, beating both Hwoarang and guest character Geese Howard (the latter is super moves instead of Rage Drives) for having the largest amount of Rage Drives available. Due to this, Lei has the longest character release day trailer to date.
  • At the last part of his reveal trailer, Lei was seen performing one of Lucky Chloe's dances, showing him to be a big fan of Chloe. Lei also has a Lucky Chloe shirt available in the Customization screen.
    • This dancing animation can be triggered after Lei breaks Lucky Chloe's Donkey Flip throw.
  • On the official Tekken 7 English website, Lei's profile has Leo Kliesen's story.[28]
