Please note: This name is Chinese; "Ling" is a family name, not a given name; the given name of this character is "Xiaoyu".

Ling Xiaoyu (Chinese: 凌曉雨 Líng Xiǎoyǔ; Japanese: リン・シャオユウ Rin Shaoyū; It may be written with given name first as Xiaoyu Ling) is a fictional character who was introduced to the Tekken franchise in Tekken 3 and has returned in every subsequent release. Xiaoyu's initial goal in the games is to build her own amusement park, which got her involved with the Mishima family and the King of Iron Fist Tournament as her means to win enough money to do so. She eventually becomes more focused on said family's issues, in particular those of Jin Kazama, in the process.

Biography[]

Ling Xiaoyu was a young, talented martial artist who dreamed of building the perfect theme park in China. Her teacher and distant relative, Wang Jinrei, told her about Heihachi Mishima, owner of the wealthy and resource-rich Mishima Zaibatsu.[9] Xiaoyu wished to seek him out to make her dream a reality, but was unsure how to get to Japan. Her chance came when she was on holiday with her family in Hong Kong. She left her family and stowed away on a yacht marked with the Mishima Zaibatsu's name. She was discovered by the staff on the yacht after they left port, and Heihachi Mishima was alerted to the situation.

When Heihachi arrived, he discovered that Xiaoyu had beaten up his staff. She approached him and threatened to fight him too. Amused, Heihachi promised to build her theme park if she won the King of Iron Fist Tournament 3.[10] Xiaoyu became a ward of the Mishima Zaibatsu.[11] She began attending the Mishima Polytechnical School and befriended Heihachi's grandson, Jin Kazama.[12] She also had a panda bodyguard who doubled as a good friend.[13]

Xiaoyu did not win the tournament. She continued to attend school, but grew bored of her daily routine with her theme park ambitions out of reach. One day, she received an anonymous email warning her that Heihachi Mishima had evil intentions and that she may be in danger. Xiaoyu suspected that the email had been sent by Jin, who had disappeared without a trace at the close of the tournament. She began to distrust Heihachi. When the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4 was announced, Xiaoyu entered in hopes of being reunited with Jin, and to unveil the truth behind Heihachi Mishima and the Mishima Zaibatsu.[11]

During the tournament, Xiaoyu was rescued by Yoshimitsu.[14] He told her about the Mishima Clan's history, and Xiaoyu began to believe that the family's misfortunes could be traced back to Heihachi's cruel upbringing of his son, Kazuya Mishima.

Upon hearing news of Heihachi Mishima's supposed death, Xiaoyu became upset. She began to wish that she could turn back time to make things right. Some time later, she met a scientist who claimed he would be able to make a time machine for her, albeit for a high price. Xiaoyu entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 with the intention of winning the prize money to finance her time machine.[15]

Xiaoyu did not win the prize money. She was relieved to learn that Heihachi Mishima was alive, but discovered that Jin, who had won the fifth tournament and gained control of the Mishima Zaibatsu, was planning to kill his grandfather. She wanted to persuade Jin to stop, but was unable to approach him due to the Mishima Zaibatsu's military build up. When the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 was announced, Xiaoyu entered in hopes of getting close to Jin to make him change his ways.[16]

Though Xiaoyu was unable to make contact with Jin during the sixth tournament, she persisted in trying to reach him. After learning of Jin's disappearance, she infiltrated the Mishima Zaibatsu in search of information. During her mission, she was confronted by a man dressed all in white, and challenged him over his refusal to let her proceed.[17]

Whilst initially Claudio had intended to use Xiaoyu as bait to get to Jin, he was impressed by her devotion to him, and, when the credibility of his organization fell apart, decided to reveal his previous ulterior motives to her, and instead help her.[18]

For six months, Xiaoyu traveled all over the world with Panda,[19] looking for clues and information on how to find and help Jin.[20] Eventually, Xiaoyu and Claudio discovered Zafina after she collapsed, and Xiaoyu attended to her while Claudio placed a seal on Zafina's arm. Zafina told them of her situation, and the three began working together.[21]

Xiaoyu, along with Panda, accompanies Claudio and Zafina to the coliseum where The King of Iron Fist Tournament is taking place, with the intention of aiding Jin and due to Zafina forseeing misfortune befalling the arena. Once inside, Zafina is taken by Kazuya, and Azazel's power is siphoned from her arm, allowing Kazuya to transform into True Devil Kazuya. As the others hold off this new form of Devil, Xiaoyu leaves the arena alongisde Jin, Panda, Asuka, and Lili to head to Yakushima and assist Jin in regaining his former powers.

The group splits up after arriving on the island, with Xiaoyu and Panda joining Jin as he heads to the shrine where he and his mother would train. However, as Jin approaches the shrine, he falls unconscious. He promises Xiaoyu that he will return, and Xiaoyu is left to guard Jin from a series of Jack-7s that are attacking the island as a part of G Corporation's forces.

Xiaoyu manages to defeat multiple Jacks, staving off their attack until Lars arrives to assist her and Jin. True Devil Kazuya also appears in order to kill Jin, and a battle ensues between him and Lars.

Jin is given enough time to reawaken, protecting Lars and Xiaoyu while in his Devil form, now able to utilize and control his abilities. Xiaoyu remains on the island with the others as Jin and Kazuya commence their battle.

Personality[]

Xiaoyu is an innocent and cheerful girl whose story is linked to Jin Kazama, her friend who has fallen into evil. Her most notable traits are her naivety and determination.

She enters her first tournament with the sole purpose of building her own amusement park, and this becomes a recurring theme in her endings. Her naivety is also shown when it comes to Heihachi Mishima since she has absolutely no awareness of his devious plans and even weeps for him after his apparent death in after the fourth tournament. She even decides to go back in time with the help of a time machine in order to try and change the tragic story of the Mishima family, and this is her main motivation to participate in the fifth tournament. Her innocent naivety is also shown in her Tekken 7 ending, where she seems oblivious to Claudio's hidden agenda after he allows her to follow him in finding Jin.

Despite her ingenuousness, Xiaoyu also displays a great deal of strength and determination when it comes to doing anything to save Jin. Believing he is good and that he can still be saved, she does not suspect in any way the demonic part of her friend. She is caring and compassionate, and is aware of Jin's more self-destructive tendencies, with one of her endings featuring a dream of hers where she talks Jin out of jumping off a building before being hugged by him.

Xiaoyu can also be immature and childish, evident in the Tekken 6 Scenario Campaign. For example, while encountering her, she is short and annoyed with Lars and Alisa, demanding to know why they are looking for Jin. She also addresses Kazuya Mishima by calling him "father" when they are not at all related and uses insults or mockery regularly when addressing enemy boss fights like with Paul Phoenix, Ganryu, or Anna Williams.

All in all, Xiaoyu is caring and determined, though she can also be naïve and immature.

Appearance[]

Xiaoyu is a Chinese teenager with soft facial features. She wears her black hair in high pigtails with side-parted bangs. Her eyes are dark brown. Originally in Tekken 3 she had a younger child-like appearance and her hair was brown; in Tekken 4 now as an adult, she appeared significantly more mature, while her outfits changed to a Western-style dress and sportswear. Her hair became black and has been so ever since. In Tekken 5, her traditional Chinese outfit became primary again and it's been orange since Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. In Tekken 7, her twin-tails have become wavy and longer.

She saw a luxury cruiser in the harbor with the name "Mishima Zaibatsu" written on it and snuck onto the ship without hesitation (Heihachi had just come to Hong Kong to ask Lei Wulong to participate in a tournament).

The Mishima Zaibatsu ship was on its way to Japan when Xiaoyu was discovered. She got into a brawl with some of the Mishima Zaibatsu's men on the spot. Heihachi rushed to the scene of the commotion and saw his subordinates defeated.

Xiaoyu rushed to Heihachi and asked him to build her ideal amusement park in China. She told him that, if she didn't get her wish, she would go on another rampage aboard the ship.

Heihachi was amazed at being threatened by someone so young and, after laughing uproariously, he promised to build the amusement park she wanted if she won the King of Iron Fist Tournament 3. Xiaoyu stayed on the ship with Heihachi and decided to enter the tournament (Heihachi was puzzled, having assumed that she would not really enter the tournament).[9]

Xiaoyu jokes that wherever they will be, they will have wrinkles. Miharu thinks that in 20 years, Xiaoyu may be married to "that certain someone", making Xiaoyu pout and feign ignorance. The sun breaks through the clouds. Xiaoyu cheers while Alisa inquires on who Miharu thinks Xiaoyu will be married to. Xiaoyu tells Alisa to figure it out herself and runs off. The girls follow and jump in the air with Xiaoyu saying that no matter what happens, the future is what one makes it.

Special Alliance Partners:

Tekken Revolution[]

Xiaoyu is featured as a playable character in Tekken Revolution.

Tekken Card Tournament []

Xiaoyu is a playable character in Tekken Card Tournament. Her cards focus on frequent draw-power at the price of having overall weak stats, making her akin to a lightning bruiser or fragile speedster. She also lacks many parries, and although she can boost her damage output with certain cards, these cards are somewhat more tricky to activate. She is not recommended for beginners, as balancing her decks can be tricky, but when mastered, she can be a very annoying adversary. Also noteworthy is that the game developers have stated that Lili players are a tough match-up for her, as Lili basically feeds off of Xiaoyu's plentiful cards to activate her own card abilities.

Fist of the North Star LEGENDS ReVIVE[]

Xiaoyu was one of four featured characters in a Fist of the North Star X Tekken 7 crossover, along with Heihachi Mishima, Kazuya Mishima, and King.

Tekken: Bloodline[]

Xiaoyu is a schoolmate of Jin Kazama, first introduced into the Tekken: Bloodline series in a montage, as Jin begins his training with Heihachi Mishima in preparation for his fight against Ogre. She is also acquainted and friends with Jin's rival, Hwoarang, having seen the two fight in the past. When the third King of Iron Fist Tournament is announced, Xiaoyu enters in the hopes of using the prize money to build her own theme park.

In spite of Jin's grievances in allowing her to participate, Xiaoyu proves her worth in the preliminary stages by defeating Nina Williams, and Heihachi comments that Xiaoyu's edge over his grandson is that she values strategy, patience, and attrition when needed, rather than wallowing in self-pity like Jin. Xiaoyu later continues to watch both Jin and Hwoarang's matches until the two reach each other in the semi-finals. To her horror, Jin's attacks suddenly become far more serious, and this only spurs Hwoarang to fight all the harder. Much to her relief, once Jin finally wins, he and Hwoarang simply shrug the battle off for a beer, even wishing for another rematch afterwards.

After Jin's semi-finals, Xiaoyu loses in the quarter-finals against King II and is sent to the infirmary for a minor concussion. She reveals to a visiting Jin that she often felt inferior and frustrated by having to constantly justify her decision to train and fight as a small girl. Rather than scolding her for joining the tournament, Jin reveals that the strongest person that he knew was also a woman, his late mother.

Xiaoyu and Hwoarang continue to watch Jin's eventual victory against King during the tournament finals, but she and Hwoarang protest when Jin is suddenly pitted against Heihachi after his hard-won victory. Jin accepts the challenge nonetheless, but his battle against Heihachi lures out Ogre, who proceeds to target Jin. Xiaoyu and the others are barred from aiding Jin as Heihachi insists that Jin's battle is a personal one.

Once Ogre transforms into True Ogre, Xiaoyu, Hwoarang, and Paul Phoenix all rush in to help Jin, but the three are overpowered, with Hwoarang and Paul being thrown into a pile of rubble by True Ogre's tail while Xiaoyu is grabbed by the neck. Seeing Xiaoyu in danger, Jin gives in to his anger and finally defeats and kills True Ogre. After this victory, however, Jin seems different, with his eyes glowing red and his voice having an otherworldly timbre. Heihachi claims that this is the Devil Gene manifesting, an evil power that Jin's father, Kazuya, had before him. Heihachi then shoots Jin in the head. Xiaoyu, Hwoarang, and Paul decry this ruthless behaviour by Heihachi, calling him worse than Kazuya. Heihachi says that may be so, but he is doing the world a favor by eliminating this evil.

Before Xiaoyu and the group can respond further, Jin transforms into Devil Jin. In this new form, Devil Jin launches at Heihachi and begins ruthlessly attacking him. When Xiaoyu and Hwoarang call out for Devil Jin to stop, Jin is able to stay his hand. After taking a single look back at Xiaoyu and the others, Devil Jin flies off into the sky.

Gameplay[]

Ling Xiaoyu uses various Chinese martial arts, which focuses on speed, evasion, and spins, flips, and back turned maneuvers to keep her opponent constantly guessing on what she'll do next. Although she lacks in damage, she has very good combo potential and is able to keep momentum and pressure on her opponents fairly easily thanks to her various flips and low attacks that are tricky to see coming. She's also known for her Phoenix stance that can avoid high attacks as well as mid attacks if she does butterfly while in this stance, which allows her to duck mid attacks, however there is a catch: It will not avoid true mid attacks, mid attacks that will hit the opponent on the ground regardless of whether they lay down or not.

Despite her lack of damage in some instances as well her range in some attacks, she stands as a formidable opponent, and is very effective and often used in Tekken 7. While not the easiest character in the game to use, she is one of the more simplistic stance based characters in the game to utilize.

Fighting Style[]

Ling Xiaoyu uses a mix of Chinese martial arts from Baguazhang to Piguaquan.

Quotes[]

Character Relationships[]

  • Panda - Her best friend, bodyguard, and pet.
  • Jin Kazama - High school friend and former classmate. Xiaoyu is infatuated with Jin and considers him a close friend. She received an anonymous email warning her about the danger she was in by associating with Heihachi Mishima, which was likely written by Jin. She also entered the sixth tournament to stop Jin from committing evil, and in Tekken 7, she infiltrated the Mishima Zaibatsu to learn more about Jin's disappearance. Prior to the events of Tekken 8, she spent months looking for him alongside Claudio Serafino and Panda, eventually aiding Jin against Kazuya and in his attempts to regain control of his Devil Gene. Jin is also her partner in the non-canon Street Fighter X Tekken and Project X Zone.
  • Heihachi Mishima - Her now deceased tutor. Xiaoyu knocked out the entire security personnel of a Mishima Zaibatsu yacht after being discovered trespassing, impressing and amusing Heihachi. He offered to take her on as a ward of the Mishima Family, training her in martial arts and granting her a position in his Mishima Polytechnical School. Heihachi also trained a Panda security guard to protect her. Xiaoyu was also warned by Jin about Heihachi's evil intentions via an anonymous e-mail she received in Tekken 4, and he also warned her about Heihachi and Mishima Zaibatsu in an interlude with him in Tekken 5. Although Xiaoyu began to distrust Heihachi after this, she still mourned his apparent death in Tekken 5. She seems to genuinely care about Heihachi and even affectionately calls him "grandpa" like she does Wang. Additionally, she also seems to be one of the very few people that Heihachi himself cares about in turn.
  • Wang Jinrei - Her distant relative and teacher. Ling affectionately calls him "grandpa", but that is not reflective of their actual blood relationship.[9]
  • Miharu Hirano - One of her best friends at Mishima High School and mutual friends with Jin Kazama as classmates.
  • Yoshimitsu - She was saved by him from Heihachi's unspecified evil plans before Tekken 5. He also told her about the Mishimas' backstory, which kickstarted Xiaoyu's desire to save Jin from their dark family dynamics.
  • Claudio Serafino - Her opponent in Tekken 7, who originally planned to use her as "bait" to lure in Jin. He later confessed everything to Xiaoyu and apologized, promising to aid her in her quest to find Jin. They share a storyline in which they seek out Devil Jin in Tekken Pachislot 4.
  • Hwoarang - Acquaintance, they recognize and address each other by name in the Tekken 6 Scenario Campaign, likely due to them both having a relation to Jin.
  • Asuka Kazama - Apparently, Xiaoyu was unaware of Asuka's intentions in searching for Jin, seeing her as a possible love rival. Classmate in the non-canonical Tekken the Pachislot 2nd and Tekken the Pachislot 3rd.
  • Jinpachi Mishima - She entered the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament for his "prize money".
  • Kuma II - One of her bosses in Tekken 3's Tekken Force mode. In Kuma's interlude with Xiaoyu, she called him out on his endless pursuit for Panda's love and tells him to move on and forget about her.
  • Leroy Smith - They are acquainted as of Tekken 8, sharing dialogue about previously meeting each other, where it is implied that Leroy had been a teacher to Xiaoyu when she was younger.
  • Zafina - Xiaoyu aided Zafina after she collapsed at the headquarters of the Sirius Marksmen. Both Xiaoyu and Claudio promise to aid Zafina.
  • Emilie De Rochefort - Her classmate in Tekken the Pachislot 2nd and Tekken the Pachislot 3rd (non-canon).
  • Alisa Bosconovitch - Her best friend in Tekken: Blood Vengeance, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Project X Zone (non-canon).
  • Anna Williams - Her employer-turned--enemy in Tekken: Blood Vengeance and rival in Tekken Card Challenge (non-canon).
  • Nina Williams - Her opponent in Tekken Pachislot intro cutscene (non-canon). She seems jealous of Nina for being stuck with Jin, thinking that Jin may have chosen her instead of Xiaoyu in misunderstanding, as seen in non-canonical Online Tekken Comic.
  • Lee Chaolan - Her school math teacher in Kyoto International High School in Tekken: Blood Vengeance (non-canon).
  • Shin Kamiya - She was sent to track him down in Tekken: Blood Vengeance (non-canon).
  • Ganryu - Her PE teacher at the Mishima high school in Tekken: Blood Vengeance (non-canon).
  • Eddy Gordo - Her rival in Tekken Card Challenge (non-canon).
  • Lei Wulong - Her rival in Tekken Card Challenge and acquaintance in Blood Vengeance (non-canon).
  • Crow - Her rival in Tekken Card Challenge (non-canon).
  • Kazuya Mishima/Devil Kazuya - Her employer in Tekken: Blood Vengeance (non-canon).
  • Josie Rizal - Her classmate in Pachislot Tekken 5 (non-canon).

Etymology[]

  • Xiaoyu's name is written in Chinese as Líng Xiǎoyǔ (凌暁雨/凌曉雨). "Ling" is actually her family name and "Xiaoyu" is her given name; in Chinese culture, the family name is given first and the given name is given second.
    • An inversion of her name can be heard in the English dub of Tekken: Blood Vengeance, where Ganryu pronounced her name as "Xiaoyu Ling".
  • Xiǎoyǔ (暁雨/曉雨) is her given name. The Chinese characters for her name mean dawn (暁/曉 xiǎo) and rain (雨 ).
  • Líng () is her family name. The Chinese character for her family name means surpass.

Trivia[]

General:

  • Despite being 18 since Tekken 4, Xiaoyu is still portrayed as a high school student as late as Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, even though, by this age, she should have finished high school. An explanation may be that she is in her last year and therefore close to finishing.
  • Xiaoyu's fighting style influenced in part by her Chinese master, Wang Jinrei.[citation needed]
  • Xiaoyu stands at 157cm, the shortest official height of any human character in the Tekken series.
  • Until the release of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Xiaoyu was the youngest human fighter in the series, having entered the tournament aged 16 in Tekken 3 and aging up to 18 for subsuquent games. Lili took the mantle of youngest human fighter when she was introduced in Dark Resurrection aged 16.
  • Despite being Chinese, Xiaoyu speaks only in Japanese, even to her master and distant relative, Wang Jinrei, in an interlude in Tekken 5. This is likely to reflect her time spent in Japan.
  • Xiaoyu's Tekken 3 and Tekken 5 ending cutscenes were the only ones to incorportate 2D animation until the release of Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

Tekken 3:

  • Ling Xiaoyu's bosses in the Tekken Force side game are (in order of appearance) Lei Wulong, Kuma II, Jin Kazama, and Heihachi Mishima.
  • Xiaoyu's ending from this game is shown playing on a television in Roger Jr.'s Tekken 5 ending.
  • Xiaoyu appears in the console opening cutscene.
  • Xiaoyu appears in Panda and Kuma's shared ending cutscene.
  • Xiaoyu's school uniform can be used after playing as her 50 times. It is selected by pressing the triangle or start button. This also works with Jin Kazama.
    • Xiaoyu's #1 win animation is disabled if she is in her school uniform. Her #1 animation is replaced with her #3 animation in-game, except during the Staff Roll in the arcade version.

Tekken Tag Tournament:

  • Xiaoyu appears in the PS2 saved data as the saved data icon for the game.
    • If the player looks at the game's PS2 data icon without doing anything, Xiaoyu will only be seen standing still. Her animation will change if the player tries to delete or copy the saved data.
    • If the player tries to delete, Xiaoyu will be seen kneeling down crying. If the player tries to copy, Xiaoyu will be seen jumping.
  • Xiaoyu's Stage 7 sub-boss is Heihachi Mishima. If Heihachi is not available, then it is Wang Jinrei. If neither Heihachi nor Wang are available, then it is Jin Kazama.
  • Xiaoyu has two ending cutscenes in this game, one of which is only accessible when a playthrough is completed with her in her school uniform outfit.
  • Xiaoyu appears in Panda's ending cutscene.

Tekken 4:

  • After beating story mode with Xiaoyu, her alternate costume becomes available by pressing Triangle.
  • Miharu Hirano is playable as an alternate costume of Xiaoyu by pressing Circle.

Tekken 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection:

  • Ling Xiaoyu's sub-boss is Jin Kazama.
  • Xiaoyu serves as a stage 4 sub-boss for Kuma and Wang Jinrei.
  • Xiaoyu appears in the opening cutscene.
  • Xiaoyu's school uniform can be chosen by pressing either the L1 button or the R1 button. Also, while wearing this costume in Tekken 5, pressing and holding the Square and Triangle buttons at the same time after winning a fight will show her secret win animation (she places her hands on her hips and says, "I'm pretty strong, you know!"). In Dark Resurrection and Tekken 6, this win animation is randomly shown, regardless of which costume she is wearing.
  • Xiaoyu's win animation, where she turns around and slaps her bottom, has two changes from Tekken 4: instead of laughing, she says "bye bye", and there is no slapping sound effect. In Tekken 6, this animation returns, with the same dialogue, only this time with a slapping sound effect.
  • Xiaoyu's Player Four outfit incorporates two large buttons featuring Taiko no Tatsujin's Don Wada and Katsu Wada.

Tekken 6 and Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion:

  • Ling Xiaoyu's "Item Move" feature is mounting her opponent's shoulders and clawing at their face while wearing a pair of neko gloves. She strikes a pose after the attack. She also has another item move, where she uses a magic wand to cast a spell on her opponent. Once the projectile hits her opponent, their head gets replaced by either the head of a panda or a pink bunny.
    • An altered version of the magic wand item move returns in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as a shared item move. In this game, the wand is named "Wizard's Staff", and the projectile causes the opponent's head to be replaced by that of a duck or a pig.
    • A strange glitch occasionally occurs if Xiaoyu successfully performs her magic wand item move on Mokujin. If one of them gets knocked out, the character knocked out rising will play with Mokujin missing his head, replaced by one of the animal heads done by Xiaoyu's magic wand item move, for a short period of time and then reappears while he is doing his unique next round preparation pose.[citation needed]
  • Xiaoyu appears in the Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion opening cutscene. She does not appear in the Tekken 6 opening cutscene.
  • In the Scenario Campaign mode, Xiaoyu is a boss at the Mishima Polytechnic stage alongside Panda.
  • Xiaoyu's avatar is used for the trophy/achievement "Treasure Amateur".

Tekken: Blood Vengeance:

  • This is the first media where Xiaoyu can be seen wearing her hair down, barring customization in previous games.

Street Fighter X Tekken:

  • Xiaoyu and Jin are the sub-boss characters if the player is using Street Fighter characters in Arcade mode.
    • Xiaoyu and Jin's sub-boss cutscene marks the one and only time in Tekken history that Xiaoyu is portrayed in a dark, malicious manner; this change in her demeanour is due to Pandora overtaking she and Jin.
  • Jin and Xiaoyu's rivals are Chun-Li and Cammy.
  • She is referred to as the "Dancing Phoenix".
  • Xiaoyu's name is misspelt twice in her prologue as "Xiayou" and "Xiaoyou".
  • Xiaoyu's second outfit is based off of Chun-Li's outfit from the Alpha series.

Project X Zone:

  • During Chapter 16, Xiaoyu and Jin meet Batsu Ichimonji when facing against ghosts and ghouls minions on their travels. Xiaoyu mentions in their conversation that she met him at the school festival at Justice Academy as the latter recognizes her from Mishima Polytechnic.
  • Xiaoyu doesn't recognize Heihachi when she meets him due to his younger appearance.

Project X Zone 2:

Tekken Tag Tournament 2:

  • Xiaoyu has special tag throws with Jin, Wang, Heihachi, Panda, Sebastian, Alisa, Asuka, Lili, and Miharu.
  • She has special win poses with Jin, Wang, Panda, Miharu, Alisa, Heihachi, Lei, Kuma, Alex, and Roger Jr.
  • Her ending is the seventh and last scene of the interconnected endings between Asuka, Lili, Miharu, Kuma, Panda, and Alisa.
    • In her ending, Miharu suggests that in 20 years Xiaoyu might be married to "that certain someone" (referring to Jin).
    • Xiaoyu appears in Miharu, Kuma, Panda, and Alisa's endings.
  • This is the first game where she is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto.[35]
  • Xiaoyu is portrayed by Claudia Alan in the "Girls Power" trailer[36] and Xuan Thanh Nguyen in the live-action short film.[37]
  • If Panda is paired with Xiaoyu, Panda can perform Ling's Storming Flower (d/b+1) with d/b+1+4. Panda will also taunt if it counter hits, just like Xiaoyu.
  • Xiaoyu's item move has her hit the opponent with a banana palm fan. Should the opponent be out of range, they will be stunned by the fan's gust of wind.

Tekken 7 and Tekken 7: Fated Retribution:

  • Xiaoyu has a PS4-exclusive costume based on her Player One outfit in Tekken 4.
  • This is the first game since Xiaoyu's debut in Tekken 3 where she does not automatically perform a False Salute after landing a counter hit Storming Flower.
  • Xiaoyu's Character Episode partner is Claudio Serafino; he appears in her ending cutscene and vice versa.

Tekken 8:

  • The name of Xiaoyu's Rage Art, "Wang's Celestial Epic", is a reference to her distant relative and teacher, Wang Jinrei.
