Tag Throws are a special type of throw in Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. They can be performed by every character with the exception of Devil and Kazuya Mishima when they are paired together in Tekken Tag Tournament. In a tag throw, the first character will grapple their opponent, tag out, then the second character will tag in while attacking.

Description[]

Generic tag throws are performed by pressing 2+5. The initial throw does not deal damage, only the tagged character's move deals damage. If the opponent tries to get up before the attack connects, the damage will be lower as it registers as a juggle.

A tag throw can only be performed while standing idle, crouching, walking forward, or walking or dashing back. In Tekken Tag Tournament, pressing 2+5 while dashing forward or running will cause the character to skid to a stop and tag out, leaving them open to attacks. However, if the 5 input is buffered prior to dashing or running and then 2 is pressed with 5 still held, the grab will occur. If 2+5 is pressed while tagging in, the move will not initiate. Additionally, with the exception of Ling Xiaoyu in her Hypnotist stance, a tag throw cannot be performed during a special stance, for example Hwoarang's Right Stance; pressing 2+5 will cause the character to tag out (in the case of Hwoarang), or no move will occur at all. Reverse Tag Throws (e.g. while back-turned) are not possible; the character will simply grab in the wrong direction.

In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, there are a set of generic tag throws that are dependent on who the current lead character is and occasionally depending on the partner as well.

Special, character-specific tag throws also appear in both Tag games. These are performed by inputting one of the character's normal throws and pressing 5 after the throw connects. The damage varies from 35-50 depending on the throw.

These throws are usually performed by pairs of characters who have some kind of connection to each other (e.g. Father and son Marshall and Forest Law can perform a special tag throw).

Generic tag throws are escaped by pressing 2 while special tag throws are escaped by the input that breaks the initial throw. In Tekken Tag Tournament, generic tag throws are treated as a right-handed throw thus are escaped with 2. Additionally, in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, all Tag Throws now reduce recoverable health.

All generic throws in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 have special escape animations when the escaping characters are a tag team, but will change to generic escape animations when the character is solo.

Trivia[]

  • In one of the promotional photos for Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Dragunov and Bryan Fury are performing the Camel Clutch/Chest Kick generic tag throw in the photo (which is exclusively used by Nina or Anna paired with someone), but they can't perform this tag throw in the actual game.
